almost time for presidential elections here in chile (11 december). i don't have a tv, so i probably have been spared the brunt of advertising (or propaganda, as we call it here :), but over the course of the last few months there has been more and more and more advertising in public space. i especially like how wherever there is an open area (say, like a median on a major road), it's covered in those sandwich-board type signs--the SAME ONE OVER AND OVER AGAIN. in an area the size of my living room, the same sign maybe 11 times? it's mind-boggling. as are the signs where the presidential candidate is endorsing other local candidates for senator, etc, and she's smiling broadly (yes, there is a female candidate--largely expected to win, but we shall see), but the other candidate has this bizarre, startled look on his face. it's almost as though he reacted poorly to the flash of the camera, but no one wanted to waste more film taking the picture again.
also, on the day of the elections, all pubic gatherings are canceled. i remember last year it was on a sunday and we weren't allowed to have church.
any interesting/confusing/etc stories about politics or elections from other nations?
