TV Snark: They Paved Paradise and Put Up a Black Hole

Netflix, thank you for triggering my sense of wonder and simple gratitude. You don't know how much you're enjoying watching a DVD until it stops playing, and then you can watch the end of the episode by switching from the DVD player to the computer, but the DVD stops playing halfway through the second episode...

Anyway, Odyssey 5, spoilers behind the cut:

It's Canadian, so everybody swears all the time, which makes perfect sense because they really are in a mess. (Also one of the few times I've ever seen anybody on TV pray when they're in a jam, although there certainly are plenty of instances of mortal danger when Pascal's Wager looks pretty good.)

It reminds me a lot of The 4400, although that had prettier people. It's a series with a short run, the characters are not immediately compelling, the actors can't do much with that bunch of lukshen* but you watch because you want to see what's going to happen. Although in both cases it's masochistic because it's a known fact that the series ends without EVER explaining The Big Secret.

I am kind of enjoying the hedonistic and perpetually lecherous** scientist. I wonder if it was accident or conspiracy that made him a dead ringer for the Hell's Kitchen guy (who also swears a lot)? Maybe later in the season he'll turn up at the Restaurant at the End of the Universe and insult the chef-patron.

There's a character called The Seeker, and I thought "Legend of the..." and "Quidditch" fairly simultaneously. My own theory is that he's the one who blew up all those planets in the first place and he's sending them back for The Murder of Roger Earthroyd.

*Yiddish for "noodles," although it sounds vaguely like "a lox," another term of Yiddish theatrical criticism.

**Or lechon-erous; he gives Miss Piggy a run for her money in terms of egotism. If a bunch of fans start watching Odyssey 5 I bet there'll be lots of Yuletide prompts pairing him with Tony Stark.
