In one of my recent posts where I posted the
RED HOT GRAND Kenshin entry to FK, some of my friends started talking about eye make-up and whatnot, and
asliceofthemoon was talking about some kind of 'glue' that Japanese (oriental?) girls use to make their eyes look big. So I told her that some Japanese girls who have single-fold eyelids do use a glue like that to make their eyelids double-fold.
And then some others were like "Huh? Single? Double? Wud'ya mean?" So I said that I'll make a post about this very subject.
Apparently, about half of all Japanese people have single-fold eyelids. (If you watch TV and you don't see many people with single-fold eyelids, that's because those beautiful people either 1)had double-fold eyelids to begin with or 2)had a plastic surgery on their eyes.) This is not unique to Japan, and my guess is this is a common thing among the races whose ancestors include those that came from Mongol. In fact, these single-fold eyelids are medically called Mongolian folds and have something to do with extra fat found in the eyelids, whereas pretty much all the other races around the world do not have such extra fat in their eyelids and their eyelids are therefore pretty much 100% double-folds. Therefore, one can say that double-folds are actually the norm, and single-folds occurred in the course of evolution, where Mongolians, living in extreme cold climates, slowly accumulated fat in their eyelids that protected their eyes.
Well, *ahem*, I have single-fold eyelids. Growing up, I can't deny that I used to wish I'd been born with double-fold eyelids. You see, double-fold eyelids generally appear larger, softer, and friendlier (and prettier =_=). A few of my friends went under the knife (in high school and college) to obtain double folds. DX Probably a lot more girls in Japan go under the knife each year just to get their eyes done. Apparently in Korea, getting this procedure done is a very common thing, and a LOT of them do it. 9_9;;
As for myself, my eyelids are single-fold but are not very thick, so they didn't make my eyes look all that small. I kinda like having single-fold eyelids now because that makes me more unique here. I don't know if my hubby would've been attracted to me enough to ask me out if I'd had double-fold eyelids. XD As the number of international marriages keeps increasing, I feel like our kind (single-fold^^) is a dying breed, since double-fold is normally the dominant one genetically..., although my first son, No.1, has single-fold eyelids! YAY to my powerful genes!!!!! XD
Anyway, I was doing a little research on this subject and found a very interesting video.
Am I the only one who thinks she was actually cuter BEFORE this little trick?? 9_9
Well, the idea is to keep using this type of glue and hopefully make the eyelids permanently double. But this apparently doesn't happen to many who use it.
While doing the research, I became increasingly sad, reading about how SO MANY young girls are so very frustrated, sad, and depressed about having single-fold eyelids! Many of them have been teased about having small eyes. Some of them can't get out of the house without this little 'glue' trick, which apparently eventually turns the skin of the eyelids stretch and droopy, which is irreversible unless you go under the knife to correct it.
Well, I'm so glad my teenage years are loooong gone.
