. FALL: PUZZLE 2009 .
Here is where you participate in the 2009 Fall Event
Happy Fall! Fall is a time for change...and festivals! So come earn some festival-themed event cards with this season's puzzle!
. EVENT DESCRIPTION .
Our fall puzzle is a wordsearch...of sorts. Probably not the sort of wordsearch you're used to seeing ;) There are two parts to this: in Part 1, you must determine the words you will be searching for and then find those words in Part 2. Please read the directions carefully!
. PART ONE .
Each image on the event cards (see below) depicts an object associated with Japanese festivals. Some of the objects are specific to the festival named on the card, while others are simply general festival items. Name each of the objects; these will be the words you will look for in Part 2. There are six (6) words in all.
ANSWERS: lantern, doll, dango, mask, star, snow
. PART TWO .
In the following paragraph, find the words from Part 1. Without altering any of the text, bold, underline and/or italicize the words when you find them.
For a long time, I considered the wordsearch to be an inferior puzzle, at least in comparison to "thinking" word puzzles, like crosswords or anagrams. (Who invented the wordsearch anyway? I wonder if he or she has made millions of dollars by now.) No trivia or interesting facts, just a list of words, all buried in a sea of nonsensical letter combinations. Wordsearches are frustrating sometimes, especially when you think you found the word, only to realize that the final letter is incorrect. ("Dang!") Or maybe your eye keeps circling around the same group of letters, even though you're quite sure no words are to be found there. At other times, it seems like there's no way that very last word can ever be found. But recently, I started to appreciate these puzzles because realized that wordsearches simply utilize a different set of skills. The puzzle is just a guise for spelling practice; a mask for improving your visual memory. Think of how hard your brain must work to make sense out of all those letters. So the next time a power outage keeps you from playing a certain online trading card game, pull out some candles or one of those outdoor lanterns you use for camping and consider doing a wordsearch or two.

NOTE: Some people listed "ice" as the corresponding word for "yukimatsuri," and the word was, by pure coincidence, located in the puzzle. However, although "ice" is related to "snow," it is an unacceptable answer because: (a) the picture on the card is a snowflake and (b) the literal translation of "yukimatsuri" is "snow festival."
