Only in Oz can you find lollies called witchetty grubs which are creamy white lollies in the shape of a fat grub. They are inspired by a traditional food of Indigenous Australians - they ate the real grubs.
Only in Oz could you find the expression 'fadoobadas' for the flabby bits on a woman's upper arms (which, when you think about it, is a truly fabulous word).
In other news, my grandfather babysat my niece the other day. She asked him, "Where is your friend - the one who comes in the car with you?"
Before Grandpa could gather his thoughts to explain to her that Granny had died, she continued, "She's in heaven now, isn't she?"
I think her mother needs to work on her concept of heaven, if my niece still expects Granny to be able to show up with Grandpa in the car, but isn't that cute? I think Grandpa quite enjoyed his visit, even the bit when she demanded that he "wake up!" and then accused him of falling asleep again. I mean, what else can you do when trapped in front of the Wiggles other than fall asleep?
