Finally!

Finished The Dante Club, and although it took me ages, I adored it. It's just my cup of tea - it's got literature-within-literature, wit, intellect and a neat but not spectacularly inventive whodunnit plot. Lovely.

New book at home The Child That Books Built by Francis Spufford.

Also, Ballard got booted out of my bag. New book in the bag is Peter Carey's Wrong About Japan. I'm a big fan of travelling books, be it "insightful and respectful" or "rude and shallow", and I gather Carey's Japan trip tale is in the latter category. Looking forward to this.

I don't feel good about admitting my defeat when it comes to The Atrocity Exhibition, though. Still, it can be picked up later, I can read a paragraph now and then, I can leaf through it and read a bit here and there. Ballard doesn't mind it being read like that.

And goodness knows that every author is anxiously watching the way I read their works, eh.

The point is that Ballard states in the author's note to The Atrocity Exhibition that a here-and-there snippet reading approach mirrors the way it was written, so readers who despair can just read what catches their interest, maybe read a nearby paragraph that resonates with the previous, and so on. I may try that. Sometime. Maybe.
