We got the bill from Bennett's ER visit for his wrist.
We have been exploring health insurance, but are currently uninsured. The best plan Adam could find for a self-employed family would cost us $900/month with a $12,000 deductable. That's right. That's not a typo. The first 12 grand is out of pocket. And still paying $900 a month. WHO HAS THAT KIND OF MONEY? This plan is only worth it if I come down with cancer or Bennett gets hits by a bus. GOD FORBID.
So. We got our bill. Adam burst into tears. Literally. Our visit costs $2,557.67. Of that, we paid a $200 uninsured good faith effort at the time. But we didn't know the total. The hospital (a for-profit) is giving us an uninsured discount. We only owe another $823. But we didn't realize that til after the freak out. This is managable. But what a roller coaster for a few minutes. I regretted taking Bennett to get his wrist checked out! And then I felt awful for regretting getting my son the care he needed! His wrist was fine, but with him it could easily have been fractured or something. GAH.
Then Adam said, it's actually better that we're uninsured, because then we would have been responsible for the full bill, and it would have gone toward our deductable. Adam made $100k last year and we cannot afford health insurance. WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THIS COUNTRY? Staying uninsured feels so irresponsible, and yet... I think we're going to put the kids on some medicare/state kids program and go uninsured for ourselves. I now feel no guilt buying the expensive food we do because I view it as our medical insurance. Good quality food and healthy meals = healthier us.
