My husband is a TA for a basic world history course. He holds office hours to answer questions, and he has to complete some tasks in assistance to the instructor of record. One of his tasks is grading 140 10-page papers! Written by mostly freshmen, to top it all off. He didn't get to make the assignment, but he has to grade them, as well as write his own papers and do all his reading, by the end of the semester. I sure don't envy him.
The assignment was to write a paper about an outstanding (whatever that means) person in the 20th century. Not necessarily outstanding in a good way. So, naturally, he has a ton of papers about Hitler and FDR. The cool thing is that one of the students wrote a paper about Wayne Gretzky! How fun. :) Some others include Oprah Winfrey, Audrey Hepburn, Mahatma Gandhi and Winston Churchill.
