Pride and Prejudice

Last week I watched the second disc of the BBC's 1995 mini-series production of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle.

I had watched the 2005 Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley and loved it. So did my husband, believe it or not. He who is such a critic of romantic movies. He isn't against the romance, he's just a movie snob and many romantic comedies are not exactly high art. He thought this movie was very well done, though, especially the cinematography (I didn't even know what cinematography was until I married him). He was actually the one who bought the movie. Wonder of wonders! A man purchases a Jane Austen movie, not against his will! :)

I absolutely LOVED the BBC version and plan on buying it as well. I watched the 2005 film again right after to see if I had a favorite and I can honestly say that I love them equally, although they are quite different in some ways (5 hours vs. 2-ish hours, for example).

I am a big fan of movies made of Jane Austen novels. My favorite part about them is the repartee between characters. I love how these respectable characters can argue and insult and snub each other while sounding almost polite and pleasant. The dialogue is great stuff.

Also Colin Firth = Mr. Darcy. The 2005 guy (Matthew McFadyen?) was very good, but Firth is the ultimate Darcy. Who can resist him? Lizzie can, but not forever.

OK, I'll stop prattling on about my romantic costume drama.

I hope everyone has a good day!
