I might be a little of #3 - although my goal would be to look like the girl next to her or else the one at the top of the page.. but I only sing very quietly to myself in perfect pitch.
I admit to doing #3 myself (although, in my case, I was trying to combine treadmill workouts with learning Japanese).
My gym sends members surveys every year. I suggested posting etiquette guidelines for the weight/ cardio room and studios (where we have classes), because there are several members who are obviously unaware that they are in a shared space and unable to play nice with others. I think that's where my peevishness comes from.
The downside is that the worst offenders will say 'oh, this doesn't apply to me' and they are never held accountable for their bad behaviour. The thing I like about this one dance instructor (who is somewhat of a douche; I ranted about him last fall) is that he will call people out if they are behaving badly. He will not allow people to come in more than 15 minutes late (and he is being generous, by the standards of the facility), and he will not allow people to come into the studio and watch the class; if they want to see what the class is like, they have to participate.
It always amazes me that there are so many douches in Vancouver - or even any at all. Maybe Vancouver is too libertarian or something. Vandoucher. Or maybe it got too selfish after everyone was very liberal...? Maybe it's radio waves from Seattle, or caffeine in the water, or low vitamin D3.
That one instructor sounds good, and yet not even up to standards - so the problems at the gym do sound too much!
I like to blame Gordon Campbell and the B.C. Fiberals (Lie-berals), but the overall douchiness of Vancouver even predates him. I drafted a post about Vancouver a while back (it's still a draft), so I might go back to it. We have our own version of the Seattle Freeze

The Starbucks milieu you describe sounds very much like the one here, which certainly extends to the barristas and staff - see tags #cafe sage, maybe i also spell that w/ a k. I've been to Starbucks in progressive Madison and it isn't too bad there. I'm sure its mostly as you describe in many Starbucks, and this forsages further business failures, esp, during these new economic times! Also, caffeine in irritable, nervous or bitchy people, only makes them worse! I think you might have mentioned to me caffeine in Vancouver's water - ? Or maybe that was "liveonearth" telling me about the same in Portland's water. I know the latter is true, and am certain it must be true of Seattle - having read/heard it in the news, regarding one of the latter. Caffeine is a natural insecticide, and a poison, which is why we become addicted to it in mild doses, and then die when we add a lot of energy drinks. It can be devastating to me if I have a cup of tea at the wrong time. So, caffeine build-up is possibly why some people at Starbuck's are

Starbucks trivia: The highest grossing store in the Starbucks chain is located in the Tsutaya bookstore overlooking Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo. The store only serves tall drinks to discourage people from lingering (camping).
My cousin's daughter saw someone at Starbucks trimming their nails at the counter. I once saw someone change their child's diaper on one of the tables (and they were less than 10 feet away from the washroom). What the hell is wrong with people? [Edit for punctuation]
Also: I don't think that camping in Starbucks is a form of protest. It's just plain selfish. (If it's crowded and there are a lot of people who are looking for a place to sit down - as it often is in Vancouver when it rains - then people should finish eating and drinking and then let someone else have a seat. If there aren't that many people there, then they can stay as long as they want.)
