The Starbucks milieu you describe sounds very much like the one here, which certainly extends to the barristas and staff - see tags #cafe sage, maybe i also spell that w/ a k. I've been to Starbucks in progressive Madison and it isn't too bad there. I'm sure its mostly as you describe in many Starbucks, and this forsages further business failures, esp, during these new economic times! Also, caffeine in irritable, nervous or bitchy people, only makes them worse! I think you might have mentioned to me caffeine in Vancouver's water - ? Or maybe that was "liveonearth" telling me about the same in Portland's water. I know the latter is true, and am certain it must be true of Seattle - having read/heard it in the news, regarding one of the latter. Caffeine is a natural insecticide, and a poison, which is why we become addicted to it in mild doses, and then die when we add a lot of energy drinks. It can be devastating to me if I have a cup of tea at the wrong time. So, caffeine build-up is possibly why some people at Starbuck's are always edgy - being "on-the-edge" when it comes to dealing with people they decide are somewhat bad - but their nervousness snowballs so that they decide these people are even lowlife or evil, and so they SHOULD push them around, just so they can gain relaxation. Pretty weird.
I kinda like the Starbuck's camper idea - maybe that person was protesting the crap-attitudes there. But, of course, that could be a bother.
I see Starbuck's as a last failing effort to hold on to the elitist liberal fantasies of the 1980's - kindof a joke that cafe eclecticism and coziness was turned into something so rude and expensive and psychological conservative-groupist. Glorified passive aggressive bullyism. Classism, mostly all in the mind. For a long time, I've wated to write a funny social commentary novel centered on such, cafes, etc... Who knows, I'm so stuck, egh.
I had my low-caffeine tea, and my server wasn't responding to my login attempts - for over 1/2 hour. Then I called up for new access numbers, and the automatic machine said there were none in this highly-populated area code! After some earlier computer problems, I thought maybe I was being shut out, for political views. So, I tried an access number from some distant city, (which is as cheap as a close one for me), but my computer would allow me to complete the input for the new dial-up number login whatever. I thought maybe someone had tampered with this aspect of my programmes. I tried one more time, and everything was fine! SO here I am...
But, even though I didn't let this bother me, cuz too premature to be bothered anyway, but even so, the tiny tiny difficulty, or stress, in this, backed by the caffeine in the tea, is snowballing internal anxiety and beginning to ruin my very hopeful day...! I must try to rest it off again very soon...
Starbucks trivia: The highest grossing store in the Starbucks chain is located in the Tsutaya bookstore overlooking Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo. The store only serves tall drinks to discourage people from lingering (camping).
My cousin's daughter saw someone at Starbucks trimming their nails at the counter. I once saw someone change their child's diaper on one of the tables (and they were less than 10 feet away from the washroom). What the hell is wrong with people? [Edit for punctuation]
Also: I don't think that camping in Starbucks is a form of protest. It's just plain selfish. (If it's crowded and there are a lot of people who are looking for a place to sit down - as it often is in Vancouver when it rains - then people should finish eating and drinking and then let someone else have a seat. If there aren't that many people there, then they can stay as long as they want.)
