I'm Still Alive!

A few random things to tide everyone over until I have enough time to write something proper:

Usually I go on and on about whole albums, but every once in a while there are songs that will not leave me alone. I've had these songs on repeat more or less constantly at work lately, to keep me sane:

Baths - Plea For some reason, this song is just adorable and inhabits that wonderful space between darker lyrics and happy music. I keep constructing vast, random AUs around it. (Someday, I will write some of them down, but they are sappy and embarrassing so I'll probably just write them down and then hide them.)

Braids - Plath Heart I picked this album up when I was going through the Polaris prize nominees, and I'm still not sure of what my final verdict is going to be. I'm torn on whether I think it's pretentious and kind of overwrought, or whether it's exactly right. It's kind of like if Animal Collective and Bjork teamed up (which, from my point of view, seems like a generally good idea, though not one I'd suggest on my own). But this song, despite having one of the most pretentious and overwrought lines in the album, keeps nabbing me and bringing me back.

Galaxie - Piste 1 Apparently I have a thing lately for dancey music. This album (Tigre et Diesel) is a total guilty pleasure of mine, since I know just enough French to know I should be embarrassed by the lyrics. But... so bouncy. So happy. So good for getting me through the stretch of work between 5:30 and 6:00 (this album needs to be longer). Warning: The music video is a little terrifying, and I couldn't find a regular video. I would hope, with such a technicolor video, it would at least illuminate exactly how one might make the sky like a magnificent dance floor, but, alas, it does not.

Yellow Ostrich - WHALE This one's actually been around for a while. I think I picked this album up around the time SXSW was happening, and yet I still come back to this song again and again.

Also in heavy rotation, but more likely to be on your radar: The Head and the Heart - Rivers and Roads; Beirut - The Rip Tide (the simplicity of this song, and its background... ♥); Fleet Foxes - The Shrine/An Argument; Bon Iver - Minnesota, WI.

Anyone have any suggestions for things I should check out?

Also on the list of recent developments that have nothing to do with my job sucking my soul out and turning it into a fine soul-paste and selling it to yuppies for a premium at farmer's markets: it's nearly Halloween, and I've somehow ended up wanting to make all of the costumes. I picked up a couple of wigs for my hypothetical Grimdark Rose and Vriska costumes (which will not exist until convention season, methinks). I'm also working on what will probably be my Halloween costume forever, even if no one gets it: Janice of Electric Mayhem (no one will get it, but I'll have fun. And that's all that matters). I'm also battling a strong desire to pick up a set of white racing leathers and a helmet and bike around dressed as the Stig, but that, thankfully, is currently beyond my budget.

And, best news yet this week: I've been summoned to jury duty. I'm pretty excited because 1) time off work! They're actually required to give me lunch breaks and I can bring my laptop and write, at least during jury selection and 2) I'm kind of gleefully anticipating the chaos this is going to cause at work, even if it means I have to clean up the mess afterward. Maybe someone will realize that I do a heck of a lot more than they think. (More likely, I'll probably just have to leave jury duty and then go in to work. But oh well! At least it's something different.)
