Guilty Confession
I don't try to grow out my facial hair often, but when I do it's less about the appearance than the fact I find combing my beard very relaxing.
Never comb the hair on top of my head, so I buy a tiny comb just for this purpose.
That and I figure hair grows out of my lower face for some reason. Be a shame not to indulge it every so often.
Shampooing it is kinda fun too.
