Vala had decided that ending up in Haurvatat was the best thing that ever happened to her. She and Daniel were happy together. All of their friends were in the village and happy. She was living the life that she always wanted but never thought she would have.
"Hello, darling," she said, walking up to Daniel at the cafe table. "What's wrong?"
"Cameron and Jon are gone," he said, explaining the reason for his troubled look.
"Gone?" she repeated. "Gone where?"
He shrugged. "I guess back home."
That made Vala pause. She hadn't really considered what it would be like to go back. "How's Claire?" she asked, trying to avoid dealing with her own thoughts.
"Not too good," Daniel said. "She was pretty upset when we talked."
She nodded. "I'll go and talk to her."
"After lunch," he said, reaching for her hand. She nodded again, understanding that they needed the time together.
And that's where Vala was headed when she suddenly found herself back at the SGC, walking down a corridor near the mess hall.
"Oh, no," she said, leaning against the wall.
Cameron rounded the bend then. "Let's go, Vala. We've got a mission."
Vala swallowed, pushing back her memories and nodded. "I'll be right there, Cameron."
He frowned. "Hurry up."
"I will," she promised, realizing that he hadn't gone to the village yet.
The rest of the team was in the gate room when Vala entered and she caught Daniel's gaze. He raised an eyebrow at her and she gave him a weak smile, noticing that he looked visibly relieved. Unfortunately, there was no time for them to talk before the mission.

It was the longest mission of Vala's life. Four days of trekking around on some barren desert planet, fighting the Ori, and wanting nothing more than to wrap her arms around Daniel. When the finally returned to the SGC, they had to sit through de-briefing and even General Landry remarked on the odd vibe in the room. Vala made a beeline for her room after the de-briefing and paced impatiently, waiting for the knock she knew was imminent.
When it finally came, she realized she was shaking as she pulled the door open. Daniel stepped inside and pushed the door closed, immediately gathering Vala into his arms.
"Oh, Daniel," she said, clinging to him.
"Vala, do you have any idea how long I've been waiting to do this?" he asked, resting his forehead against hers.
She smiled. "I can't even imagine what it's been like for you."
He bent his head and kissed her. "It can't be the same here as it was there, you know," he said quietly.
"I know," she said. "Can you stay with me tonight?"
"I would love to," Daniel said, leading her over to the bed.

"Sam told me that Cameron doesn't remember," Daniel told Vala a few nights later when they went out to dinner.
"Oh, no," Vala said, covering her mouth. "What about Jon?"
Daniel shrugged. "I don't know; I haven't been able to reach him. Sam said she was going to call him and let him know that Cam's in the infirmary."
She nodded. "I don't understand why we all remember and he doesn't."
"Neither do I," he said, reaching across the table for her hand. "I don't know what I would have done if you hadn't remembered."
Vala smirked. "I would have just had to wear you down again."
Shaking his head, Daniel laughed. "That I don't doubt for an instant, Vala. I wanted so many times to tell you about the village. Or to hug you. It was driving me crazy not to be with you. Especially with you throwing yourself at me. I knew that I had to wait though, or risk screwing everything up."
"I feel like I should apologize for making it more difficult for you," she teased. "But I think we both know that I wouldn't mean it."
"The only thing that got me through when you disappeared was knowing that we would get you back," he admitted. "And when we did, it was the hardest thing I ever had to do, letting you go home alone."
She squeezed his hand. "I am sorry you had to go through that," she said sincerely. "I wish I had known when you disappeared and went all Prior on us."
Daniel actually managed to look sheepish. "Yeah. I wish I could have given you warning. But I knew that I'd come through it alright since you and Cameron never mentioned it in the village."
"I forgive you, Daniel," Vala said. "What are we going to do now?"
"Well... we have to be discrete at work," he said. "Landry would boot us both if he had any idea we were together. Maybe we can find you an apartment off-base? That would make it easier for us to see each other and not worry about getting caught."
Vala nodded. "That seems reasonable. Especially if there is something open in your building. Landry will assume that you're keeping an eye on me to make sure I don't get in any trouble."
"That makes a lot of sense," he agreed.
The waitress brought their food over then and they ate in companionable silence. After they finished their meal, Daniel suggested they enjoy dessert at his place. "I like that plan," Vala agreed. "But I do have one question."
"What's that?" Daniel asked, his hand on the small of her back as he led her out of the restaurant.
"When can we have sex somewhere dangerous on base? I'm thinking Landry's office. Or the briefing room. Or maybe..."
Daniel cut off her rambling with a kiss. "You're going to drive me insane, Vala."
Vala grinned. "That's why you love me."
