The twisted webs we weave when we practice to deceive...

I was torn between being disappointed and delighted with the recent developments concerning Mr. Wood and his hunt for the vampire. At first, I was disappointed that he'd taken so long in contacting the Slayer...but then I was delighted to hear that things had taken a surprising turn.

He contacted me earlier this afternoon in apparent agony over what he learned in Sunnydale. He demanded to know if I was aware that the Slayer had allied herself with a vampire, something he considered abhorrent, to say the least. He demanded to know if I had told him the whole truth.

I admitted that I hadn't.

Then I explained everything to him.

I told him that the Slayer had a rebellious streak within her, one which had caused the Watchers' Council much consternation over the years, to say nothing of her own Watcher. I explained that she had even severed ties with the Council at one point, only recently re-establishing relations with them.

I explained that Miss Summers actually died recently at the hands of an insane Hell goddess, a development he was already aware of. What he wasn't aware of, however, was that when she was resurrected, she was no longer fully human. I also mentioned that I thought even her closest friends were as yet unaware of this development.

Then I told him of the Slayer's relationship with the vampire Angelus. That they had been lovers for a time. That she'd had several opportunities to rid the world of his evil forever, only to hesitate each time until the threat was so great that she had no choice but to send him to Hell.

In short, I painted a picture of a troubled young woman who often abused her responsibility as Slayer and formed unsavory alliances with creatures she was sworn to kill -- who might even consider herself one of these creatures, as well.

Mr. Wood did not take this new information well, and in fact was disturbed that I had not come forth earlier with it. I merely explained that I was trying to honor the legacy of his late mother, and that implicating this generation's Slayer might have tarnished the honor of those who came before.

He was still agitated. But I think he believed me. He has no reason not to.

After all, a good lawyer never lies. He merely arranges the facts in such a way suitable to his own needs.

I'm eagerly looking forward to Mr. Wood's next update from Sunnydale. I wonder...who will he kill first? The vampire, or the Slayer herself...?
