Dear NY State-- aren't we past the point of discrimination? Really? You might not agree with how people live their lives, but it doesn't give you the right to tell them they cannot get married. I happen to HATE the way you guys run this state, and yet you still do what you want. Today I am extremely disappointed to hea...r that you're prolonging

I just have a little more rambling myself.
It's about the whole, "it doesn't affect me" argument.
Many people use that argument. I used to use it as well. Once I understood how our government is supposed work, I stopped using it.
Does a gay marriage "hurt" someone else? Not directly.
Does a guy smoking weed in his apartment "hurt" someone else? Not directly.
Does a person offering $40 bjs via CraigsList "hurt" someone else? Not directly.
Although these things don't affect others directly, the community still decides what activities can and cannot be tolerated.
Imagine a woman goes to a public park with a video camera. He records several hours of children playing. Later that evening, she hosts a party. He plays the recording during the party and the guests masturbate to the images.
Neither the hosts nor the guest had ever touched the children. Never approached them. Never spoke to them. The hosts and the guest have no desire to ever directly engage minors.
Karen, even though their activity hasn't "hurt" anyone, would you want such actions to be tolerated??
I image the answer would be, "No."
I'd also imagine that you would want a government that has rules and punishments for such actions.
On the other hand, I'd imagine the woman might want to be able to openly video tape and masturbate to images of children. What about her pursuit of happiness?
You have a point of view. She has a point of view. Others in the community have their points of view.
The populous votes. Majority rules. The government makes rules and punishments accordingly.
Karen, I'm not suggesting that gay marriage and child porn are the same thing. I am suggesting that a HUGE percentage of the populous believes that gay marriage should not be legal. It doesn't matter that gay marriage doesn't directly affect them, it is something they feel should not be allowed.
Discrimination sucks. No doubt about it. As a black man, I'm very thankful for living in this era instead of a few decades or centuries ago. Still, in a system that follows "majority rules", discrimination is inevitable. If gay marriage ever does become fully legalized, that will mean people against it will lose.
No matter how good the pizza, how cool the concert, or how directly an activity could "hurt" another person, someone has to lose.
Okay. End of soapbox rant. Thanks for reading.
