Went to my $2 movie last night to see Sound of Rio, a documentary about Choro - Brazilian "urban" music. Absolutely beautiful - the people, the music, the country... I love listening to them speak; their words come out as eloquently as their music, liquid romance for the soul. I love watching them play - such an intensity of emotions put into their playing. The way that the entire community comes together to teach, learn, grow, a build a song is just incredible. In some ways I think it's sad that America is such a melting pot - everything is so blurred & murky that we're lacking that sense of history & culture that many other countries have. (Not ALL of the US, just as a generalization here.) There was a man who played an acrylic clarinet. I didn't even know such a thing existed, but he coaxed the most delicious notes from it.
It's really depressing to me that a theater full of people showed up for the Punk Is Not Dead, but 12 people showed up to this one. I left the theater feeling awake with emotion, and drunk with the joy in these people's lives - it was completely contagious, even on the screen. Brazil has always been on my list of places to visit before I die, and seeing this just gave that desire a little nudge. I have no idea if it's available on Netflix, but if it is you should definitely add Sound of Rio to your queue.
(Didn't mean to write an entire review here, the music was just amazing, though, and I got so swept up in the movie...)
