Words to Thoughts

It wasn't too long after Alan had joined Robert in the bed, curling up next to him, when Robert's breathing rate changed, becoming faster and more frantic. Robert whimpered, deep in his throat, and his eyes moved rapidly beneath his lids. He tried to move, but there seemed to be something holding him down that he couldn't break free from. "Alan." his voice was no more than a whisper, muffled into his pillow.

Alan woke to a pressure around his arm, tightening like a frightened boa constrictor. He was confused until he saw the shaking shoulders of his boyfriend. He cursed softly and tried to pull his arm from the vice-like grip, but the fingers only tightened, bringing tears to his eyes. "Robert? It's just a bad dream. Wake up?" He moved his other arm from under the pillow and brought it around to Robert's brow, feeling heat and sweat. "Love, please wake up," he said through gritted teeth, gently patting Robert on the cheek and trying again to pull his arm free. "Robert!"

Finally the grip loosened enough for Alan to free himself. He rolled to his side and turned the bedside lamp on, then turned back to Robert, trying to ignore the tingling radiating up and down his arm as his circulation returned. Robert was now squeezing the life out of his pillow and Alan winced in sympathy. He got out of bed and went around to the opposite side and kneeled down on the floor so he could see Robert's face and smooth the hair from his forehead, watching as he slowly relaxed and started to stir.

"Are you awake?"

Robert groaned, but didn't open his eyes. "Yes," he said at last as Alan ran a thumb over his left eyebrow. "I woke you up, didn't I?" He slowly opened his eyes, looking at Alan's face.

"It's okay. Do you remember what you were dreaming about?"

Robert closed his eyes, pained at the memory. "Was like the last several months all over again."

Alan got up and went back to his side of the bed as Robert rolled to his back. "Have nightmares often?" he asked, sitting on top of the covers.

"No. Or at least I don't remember..." He caught sight of Alan's arm, red and already starting to bruise. "What happened to your arm?" He was afraid of the answer.

"Turns out, me boyfriend has a very firm grip."

Robert gently rubbed the largest of the bruises, horrified.

"Don't worry about it. Come on, back to sleep."

"I don't think I can."

"Maybe a good hot shower will relax you?" When Robert didn't say anything, he added, "That is my polite way of saying you need one, love."

Robert nodded and slowly sat up, feeling stiff and not at all rested from his couple-hour sleep.

"Do you need anything? Any help?"

"I'm good." A small glance and he hurried off to the bathroom.

That was...awkward, Alan sighed up at the ceiling.

Long minutes passed before Robert changed from his sweat-soaked clothes to get into the shower. He felt just awful for hurting Alan, no matter how unintentional it had been. He didn't need to worry about Alan forgiving him, since blame had never been passed, but that didn't make him feel any better.

After he was done showering, drying, and dressing, he rejoined Alan in the bedroom, but didn't lie down. Alan had already fallen back asleep and Robert watched him for a minute before moving to look out the window. From here he had an awesome view of the ocean, the moonlight dancing across her surface. He shivered.

"Come back to bed, Robert," Alan mumbled, blindly reaching where he sensed Robert to be standing, reach falling way short.

Feeling exhausted, yet not sleepy, Robert slid into bed. He hesitated, but then Alan was scooting up against him, wrapping warm limbs around his chilled ones.

"Not leaving you," Alan whispered into Robert's shoulder as he started to drift back to slumber.

Despite the reassurance, it was a long time before Robert finally fell back asleep.
