The Undead, they are everywhere! :O
So, as announced earlier, I started watching the Vampire Diaries:
I'm at episode 9 now and I can definitely say that I'm hooked. The show is so not what I expected. What I expected from the premise, that is. I've read a lot of praise lately and I can wholeheartedly agree with all of it:
- It is *incredibly* fast-paced. Nine episodes in and we already know the master-plan of the 'villain', are aware of some central mysteries behind the town, got our first main-character killed, the first kiss between the main couple happened in episode 2 and most of the characters already know about the vampires and other supernatural activities.
- Damon is awesome. He's allowed to be evil yet layered and so far (at least in my opinion and in the TV-villain sense of the word) still redeemable. Ian Somerhalder just shines in this role!
- The history behind Mystic Falls is interesting and has lots of potential.
- It even has more shocking moments than I thought it would.
- The soundtrack is as awesome as expected.
- And then, there's four more reasons (well, actually three by now):
And where there are vampires, zombies might not be far:
The Walking Dead 1x01: Wow, that was... bold! In many ways...
I knew that cable had much more liberties when it came to gore and/or storytelling but this?! As for the gore, it had some nice effects, didn't look fake or cheap and even if I don't think they'll have that much money to spend on future episodes. I'm confident they still can keep high production standards. And the cinematography and atmosphere were just overwhelming. As for the storytelling: It was slow, very slow at times but it never felt too slow or even boring. It was just what it took to get used to the world just like our hero (whom I also liked very much) had to. And I also liked that they didn't go for the cheap shocking moments (for example I expected a zombie in the staircase when he lit the second or third match, but that there wasn't one did make the scene even scarier and better). Not much to say about the other characters yet (I liked Lennie James and his son but afaik they won't be back soon) but I'm looking forward to meeting them. So, yes - show is definitely a keeper.
