My last free weekend of the year was predictably uneventful. On Saturday we went to Westfield to complete this year's Christmas shopping, and although it wasn't too busy (for Westfield) it was still a very un-fun experience. Buying toys for James' nieces was difficult; I remember toys being so much more varied years ago, my favourites being vaguely science related stuff, but all of that seems to have vanished. Am I just remembering it wrong?
On Friday we saw Argo, and I found it reasonably entertaining. Maybe it's because of the fairly simple nature of the story - it doesn't require the same suspension of disbelief required for something like Bond or Prometheus. People may have criticisms of the way the angry mobs are depicted, but I imagine that most revolutions (where you're not one of the revolutionaries) must feel like that.
Yesterday James spent some time setting up Overtone with Sublime REPL for live coding, making music. It looks interesting, but I don't understand any of it. As with Max/MSP I'll probably wait until James figures it all out, and then ask him how to use it. For years I wanted to make noise without having any idea of where to start, and I have to say that it's a bit disappointing, knowing what I know now, that I couldn't work any of it out myself. When I did look into it, the noise community struck me as being particularly unhelpful, not wanting to give anything away. I just didn't realise at the time that once you're over that initial barrier (of knowing how to start) it's not nearly as hard as it looks.
