James said he had a surprise for me when I got home last night.
I walked in with my bag under my arm and my coffe mug with keys in the other. The apartment was quiet and further inside, on the floor, was a bottle of wine sitting on ice with two glasses on the floor sitting on top of a pale old blue book that had a sticky sticking out of it. I call out for James, no answer. I put the wine glasses aside, pick up the book and read the note:
Press play on the cd player and slightly turn up the volume.
Read page 86, PROOF XIX
I turn to the page and read this:
THAT I did always love,
I bring thee proof:
That till I loved
I did not love enough.
That I shall love alway,
I offer thee
That love is life,
And life hath immortality.
This, dost thou doubt, sweet?
Then have I
Nothing to show
But Calvary.
It is a poem by Emily Dickinson.
At the bottom of the note it reads: "Beethoven: Piano Sonata No.2 Appassionato. <3 "
Wine, Poetry (in an OLD book) and Classical music are methods of winning my heart over in an instant. He walked out and smiled at me a few seconds into the climax of the instrumental piece and I just wrapped my arms around him. He then said he was going to cook, but by the time he came back from the bookstore, he didn't have much time so he ordered a pizza. I said it was fine. I told him I really loved the poem and these next few words meant more than anything; "Good, I was worried, I must have read about 500 poems," and just when I thought he couldn't have anything more, he handed me an old book in a deep red with gold embossed drama faces (the happy sad masks) and gasped. Plays, musicals, dramas! It was a collection of Shakespears Comedy Works. He went to this tiny bookstore we both LOVE because they carry books that are they type you find in ancient libraries, hard leather covered with old english gold embossings.
