Notes: Once again this is a summer cliff hanger story.
The next few moments were full of confusion. Jayne, with Vera still blasting away, joined the crew in between the cliffs where they were protected from the ship’s gun fire. Mal was barking orders at Simon telling him to fix Inara while the good doctor tried to explain without any medical supplies there wasn’t much he could do. Kaylee and River were both muttering but the later girl’s words made no sense.
It was Zoe that made them all silent. “Listen!” she yelled at them.
The voices of the crew grew silent.
“I don’t hear nothing,” Kaylee said.
“Exactly, the ship must be landing. Captain, I would like to go and assess the situation. See whom we might be dealing with and what the future foretells if we do battle with them.” Zoe only had the pistol she kept strapped to her leg but her face showed the determination of the warrior she was.
Mal nodded, “Alright sounds like a mighty good plan. Jayne- be ready if she needs any cover.”
“Gotch ya,” Jayne replied, reloading Vera.
Zoe set out staying low and close to the cliffs. Jayne trailed slightly and then stopped, waiting as he had been instructed.
“The blood oozes, the blood comes out, it forms a pattern in the ground,” River spoke, gazing at Inara.
“Doctor, I need her patched up now,” Mal said, his voice tense.
“I have already told you there isn’t much I can do. Her skull has been punctured by some object. Along with the bleeding, brain tissue could also be exiting the cranium. On top of that she has swelling around the back lobes. Brain function may have ceased already. This is a serious injury, not something that I can even diagnose throughly out on a beach as gunfire prevails on us.” Simon shook his head. “Mal, Inara might be dying.”
He wouldn’t lose someone else, he couldn’t, not now. Not her. He had already lost too much. A pounding began behind his eyes. Simon was still speaking but he couldn’t hear him, he only saw the blood pouring out of Inara. He was brought back in time to when they danced together at the ball. She was close to him bu still, as always, so far away.
Mal pulled his pistol out of his holder and removed the safety. “The only person who might be dying is you if you don’t do as I told you to. I’ll get you your damn medical supplies and you make sure she gets well. Are we clear?”
“Captain...” Kaylee began.
“This doesn’t concern you, Kaylee. Are we clear Doctor?”
“Crystal,” Simon answered bending over Inara. “I don’t know why she ever came back for you,” he said quietly but not quietly enough that the words didn’t reach Mal’s ears.
“What did you say?” Mal yelled at him grabbing his blue shirt collar and pushing him to the ground. He rested the barrel on the other man’s forehead. “What did you say?” he repeated.
Simon noticeably swallowed.
“Stop this kuang!” Kaylee yelled at Mal grabbing for his arm.
“No!” River screamed as the sound of Mal’s gun going off rang into the air.
