More of the summer cliffhanger series *G*

Title: Bodies in Motion
Chapter: 2
Rating: PG-13 for a word
Fandom: Firefly

They wouldn’t recall how scared they been after everything went to black. Simon won’t realize it was his own nails that had dug deep wounds into River’s hand as Serenity spun around in the sky. Inara wouldn’t know she had seen what appeared to be Wash’s image in front of her moments before the ground and the ship connected. A few moments of their lives were erased from their consciousness.

It was Mal who opened his eyes first staring at the blurry imagine in front of him. “River?” he muttered wiping blood away from his eyes.

“We need to find safety.”

“Are we...dead?”

“No,” River replied and she seemed to shake her head at him. “I have to check on Simon,” she began moving away.

“Wait, help me up,” he said, trying to lift himself up on his arm. His body, he noticed, was laying on the cool sand that was placed on the planet Laos. Everything appeared in working order expect for the gash above his right eye.

River returned to him and putting her arm under his, helped him to stand.

“I got everyone out of the ship, Captain,” she told him.

“Is everyone alive?” He had lost many men and women during the course of battle but when you lived with people, when they became your family, their lost was even more devastating. Mal never tried to let on how much he missed Book’s sermons and just his presence on the boat. He didn’t reveal that he had begun to say words to him at night before sleep overtook him, asking for his help, his guidance. Shepard Book would have told him he was beginning to have a religion again but he wasn’t; God he didn’t put his trust into. But he had trusted his friend.

Wash’s sudden death was jarring. Not only did he grieve for his pilot, his friend, he was sadden for Zoe who had lost a truly wonderful spouse. When Mal would sit in the pilot seat, he couldn’t help but think of Wash playing with his plastic dinosaurs, making jokes and getting them out of one harried situation after another. Wash had saved them, saved his boat so many times. Serenity seemed to miss him too, chugging along more now than it had in the past. It didn’t glide for Mal like he had Wash. And Mal knew he hadn’t landed the ship as well as Wash would have.

“Brain waves functioning, hearts beating, bodies are alive,” River told him. “No time for thinking,” she pulled his arm, “The ship is still after us.”

Mal’s mind cleared at that thought and he joined River in an awkward run to where Simon lay still unconscious.

“Try to get your brother awake, I’ll round up the others,” he instructed her.

He made it to Zoe first who was just coming to. “Captain?”

“Yeah, we’re alive for now at least. Can you move?”

“I think so.”

“Good, I’m checking on Kaylee.” He moved over to where Kaylee lay and shook her shoulder. She grunted but her eyes began to open.

Mal’s eyes glanced at the sky to see the ship that had blasted them, a Piron Flyer, not Alliance issue.

He was off to Jayne who was beginning to move on his own. “Shen me di yu,” he moaned, Vera still laid in his arms.

“See that ship,” Mal pointed to the sky, “Ask Vera to give to the middle finger for me.”

“She won’t do much damage but I can piss them off for ya.”

“That’s what I want you to do, on my signal.”

Mal’s last stop was at Inara who laid like an angel upon the sand. “Wake up,” he told her putting his hand to the side of her head, his hand felt the warmth and pulling it back he saw the blood. “Doctor!” he yelled.

His cry was answered by a blast from the Piron Flyer a few yards away. Sand bellowed around the crew and he closed his eyes to keep it from blinding him.

“Captain, the cliffs are about five yards away,” Zoe yelled to him as she helped Kaylee to her feet.

“Zoe, get everyone over there now! Jayne, provide cover.”

“Okay Vera, time to show those fuckers,” he responded pulling the trigger.

Mal picked up Inara as gently as possible in his arms and began the run to the cliffs behind the others. “Don’t you die on me, you hear,” he said quietly. “Wu bie.”
