If nothing else, can someone comment just to let me know that the email posting works…
Picking up from what I remember of my last post:
M was OK when I got to the hospital that morning. His BP crashed at noon. Within a couple of hours he was on life support and the doctor was telling us that he probably wasn’t going to make it and to go say our goodbyes.
From there he was transferred (precariously) to another hospital, where he stayed for a total of 5 hours before they transferred him back to the first hospital. He stabilized there, and actually woke up briefly to give everyone hugs and thumbs up. Within 24 hours we were in an air ambulance to Edmonton because they have a specialized cardiac care unit at the university hospital.
M’s family (parents & 2 sisters) flew up right away, and it looks like my mom and some friends are driving and flying up for the weekend.
My life has turned into an episode of House. Seriously. I have not heard so much talk about experimenting since I was in biology. I won’t go into too much detail, because at this point I could write an entire essay, but the gist of it is this:
M has myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle). As you can imagine, when your heart stops working a lot of other things go wrong. They suspect the myocarditis is viral, which means all they can do is treat the symptoms. The difficult part is that the treatment for some symptoms make other symptoms worse, so it’s a really delicate balance. He is currently on life support, and dialysis, as well as a variety of medications to keep his blood pressure up and heart rate down. He has also contracted a staph infection. Nevertheless, he continues to show slight signs of improvement. The alternative is bypass, and if that doesn’t work, a heart transplant. We’re not there yet and hopefully never will be. I like his current heart, thankyouverymuch J
I can’t promise I’ll reply to comments, but am keeping them enabled because I appreciate (and need) all the well wishes that I have received so far.
