Part One:
The most useful aspect of studying literature for me has been reading in a conscious manner. I am more aware of what is actually being said" between the lines" of what I am reading. Techniques such as, close reading, have helped me to decode the mysteries that an author has contained within their text. If I had to choose an area that I would like to improve upon it would have to be constructing a better analytical essay. I found that I have no shortage of ideas or insight, but when it comes to expressing them analytically using certain terms I get somewhat confused. I will continue to work on this and hopefully write something I am more pleased with towards the end of the term.
Part Two:
Definitions.
1.) Hamartia - to error is human. The unintended consequences of a noble action. A characters "tragic flaw"
A well intentioned Oedipus reveals the truth behind who murdered Laius and unintentionally uncovers his own tragic past.
2.) Hubris - an overestimation of one's own ability. The process by which an individual derives personal satisfaction after performing an act that has shamed or humiliated another person.
Oedipus is actually guilty of shaming and humiliating himself through his own actions. He has a "god complex" that drives his decision making and that inevitably leads him to murder his own father and marry his mother.
3.) Catharsis - an emotional release of feelings that leads to an awareness - spiritual awakening.
Catharsis is a constant presence throughout the play as we watch Oedipus become a tragic character. Because Oedipus has had the truth kept from him; he does not understand the consequences of his actions. These consequences set the stage for catharsis as the audience feels badly for Oedipus and also upset by the choices he makes for himself.
4.) Peripeteia - a change in character brought about by logic or intellect.
Perhaps peripeteia occurs for Oedipus towards the end of the play as the truth about his past is revealed to him. A once mighty and pompous Oedipus becomes somber and dark as he struggles to accept the truth about his past and his actions.
5.) Anagnorisis - a discovery that leads to an awareness of one's own true character.
Oedipus discovers he has killed his father and married his mother. He learns that he has done this without the proper knowledge about who he really is and in turn it destroys him.
