In the short story "The Boat" the use of intertextuality becomes apparent when the narrator refers to Thomas Hardy's "Eustacia Vye" and how she reminded him of his mother in a physical nature - " tall dark and powerfully energetic".Eustacia Vye was a tragic character from Thomas Hardy's "The Return Of The Native". Like his mother she is well intended , but despite those good intentions ends up living a very tragic life. Another reference is made to "David Copperfield" and the "Peggoty's and how they loved the sea". The same can be said of the "Peggoty's" . They were very honest, hardworking people of the sea, who, despite this, were met with tragedy. Once again it can be argued that this is a tool to help the reader understand what the author is trying to convey.  I believe the Author is using intertextuality to draw the reader's attention to the tragic part of his characters.  Sharing these references allows the reader a priveledged view into the authours own mind. It connects you to the author or narrator in a personal way; by making reference to something outside the immediate story. In the end his father dies and you are left to wonder: was it an accident or did he kill himself ? Perhaps these answers lie in the use of intertextuality - an author's message.

Metafiction is a literary term that describes a work of fiction being inately aware of its own fictious nature. An example of this can be seen in the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I think an authour or director might use this device to try and connect with their audience in more personal way.
