My heart bleeds for the youth of this city, the shattered souls, who become the fuel of public debate. They age, mature, learn from their mistakes, but continously get pushed back instead of being helped forward. Society wants the outside world to believe change is possible. Is this even possible when it is easier to bully the defenseless? If an individual is robbed of a voice, if opinions grow that stigmatize, rather than heal, flows through the mind of a potential forgiver than the popular decision would be to follow the masses.

Without a chance of redemption, and disallowing the opportunity to reveal that it's possible to be a better person, the target becomes placed in a negative category. The challenge to break free of a mental prison of guilt, and the prospect of proving a change in character and personality is silenced.

Can it be true that the root cause of bullying is a creation of denial by those who would immediately grip a microphone and proclaim that bullying must end? I find it alarming that such an attitude, the idea that strength in numbers, designed to bring a positive spin to an issue is the actual problem. How then can an individual, who in their youth; whether mentally or physically, prove they have indeed changed without having to bow down to the factors of the abuse from the bullying?

It stems from attitude, character, the will or desire to communicate, and the ability to forgive and offer the individual the opportunity to prove without a shadow of a doubt that the present will never repeat the past. The present allows for the future to become brighter. Refusing this chance, blocking the opportunity, leaves the youth feeling rejected and does nothing to rebuild self esteem.

Is this why open dialogue fails? Is this why bullying is difficult to tackle? Is it because the voices who shout down bullying - the ones who view it as hurtful and insulting - are just as responsible; if not the aggression and therefore more guilty party?

For the youth to rise and stand tall, for the issue to be defeated, one must open their eyes and see the true cause. They then must ask themselves one important question.

Do I, as an individual wishing to see this world become a better place, continue my way of life, or do I change and prove I am not like those who I wish to see disappear?
