benjamin gates, pg-13, ~2500 "Five important dates Benjamin Franklin Gates didn't really enjoy before the age of forty-two." (takes place in the Labradoodle universe)
I loved all this background stuff, bb. And is it...weird how much I related to him far more here than I did in canon. Cause Ben is cool in all but in this story I was just like "Holy LORD I know how that feels, buddy! *hug*" Just...like the disgruntlement with everyone else his age because it's obvious, you know, that he can play the college kid thing so tounge in cheek and blase, but honestly be disgusted at how every other person misses the point.
And of course, the Ben/Riley preslash moment at the end was love XD The only thing I wondered about was why Ben considered Riley by his last name, but Ian by his first. It's kind of inventive, but also strange, because he's indebted to Ian for the funding, yet his 'subordinate' Riley gets called by the more proper address. I'd like to hear why you did that, cause I noticed it and was interested :D

asdfghkl, YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU, RIGHT?
One thing that hit me from the beginning is that the only people I've ever met who are always THAT bizarrely mellow is that all that mellow is hiding some serious frustration/bitterness/issues and asdfghjkl, he is so embittered. And he has his reasons (and Patrick has his own reasons for being so >:| but that's another personal canon) and Ben hides it well 99% of the time, and he deals with a sizable chunk at end of NT through finding the treasure and validating his grandpa (see how he reacts to seeing his dad in movie one but is then stealing space with his Boxes of Doom in movie two) and yet his whole response to his dad throughout the scene leading up to seeing Mom and then after? BB HAS ISSUES. He doesn't turn the anger on Mom but there's definitely some resentment there which, you know, makes sense based on how both of them are clearly at fault in the marriage.

This whole meaning of the scene beyond Ben's bitterness was that as much as Ben looked at this sort of 'wait, let me run after you and help you!' response with a lot of wariness, especially from somebody younger than himself, Roley wore him down

OMG this is so spot on. Forgive me if my mind is too much mush to properly comment, I might just devolve into much flailing of hands. :) But in so few words this fills in so much. The characterization is perfect and this:
Students had a tendency to fight to get into his classes, and Ben had one of the best records when it came to students actually showing up and not dropping out. And he loved taking the teaching jobs when they came up, loved getting into the flow of a lecture and loved spotting the one or two kids spread through the crowd that he knew would go far in whatever fields they decided to go into. But when it came to his peers, there were the looks and the elbow nudges. The chin points and the short comments during a conversation that never let him forget just how well he actually fit into their circles. Ben was able to ignore it most of the time- which was sometimes a mistake.Yes. Yes, yes, I so see this. He fits in and yet he doesn't, and all of it naturally will cause a reaction within him even if his demeanor doesn't
