OMG this is so spot on. Forgive me if my mind is too much mush to properly comment, I might just devolve into much flailing of hands. :) But in so few words this fills in so much. The characterization is perfect and this:

Students had a tendency to fight to get into his classes, and Ben had one of the best records when it came to students actually showing up and not dropping out. And he loved taking the teaching jobs when they came up, loved getting into the flow of a lecture and loved spotting the one or two kids spread through the crowd that he knew would go far in whatever fields they decided to go into. But when it came to his peers, there were the looks and the elbow nudges. The chin points and the short comments during a conversation that never let him forget just how well he actually fit into their circles. Ben was able to ignore it most of the time- which was sometimes a mistake.

Yes. Yes, yes, I so see this. He fits in and yet he doesn't, and all of it naturally will cause a reaction within him even if his demeanor doesn't betray it.

Forgive me, it's been a long time since I read good "National Treasure" fic. :)

The fact that you got this makes me :D and \o/ and squeal and bounce and flail all over the damn place because this damn little fandom has carved out a chunk of my little heart and I went to delve into all these LAYERS OF CHARACTER and, yay, you read and spazzed, yay, and I have such a soft spot for him, so much, and IT CAME ACROSS, OMG, YAY.
