Clockwork Boys, by T. Kingfisher. This is the first book in a two-part story set in the same world as Paladin's Grace, which I had just read and enjoyed. In this fantasy world (where magic is associated with gods and demons rather than wizards), an army of "clockwork boys" - huge, ruthless, automata - is rampaging through the countryside. The army is headed toward a city (and I didn't catch its name, if it was there). In desperation, the city is sending forth a small group of criminals to stop it - a forger, an assassin, and a paladin who had slaughtered a bunch of people while under the control of a now-dead demon. They're basically good folk (except the assassin, who is still more amoral than evil), and, once they've been joined by a young misogynist scholar, off they go. It's entertaining light reading.
