The reason I love making comics from Cyc´s stories is, that her scenes are so accurately composed and vivid, all that´s left for me to do is bring the picture in my head to the piece of paper before me.
Easy! :D
But sometimes several images pop into my head and it´s hard to decide which one is best.
And sometimes stuff creeps in that shouldn´t.
Sometimes I get so enamored with some random detail I lose the characterisation. This IS Batman and Superman, after all.
Most of the time I try not to fall back on stock superhero poses and expressions. The problem is, by trying to avoid the conventional teeth gnashing and and macho posturing, the pictures often tend to turn out too low key. Comics are comics, high drama is mandatory. So, how to circumvent one thing and achieve the other?
Well for one, ask Cyc. :D
The first idea I had for the first meeting of Batman and Superman in Cyc´s "Sonata in Black and White" was this. I initially liked the idea of the tenuous hold Batman has on the steep slope of LexTower´s glass roof. I liked the angle, the way Batman´s cape bunched behind him and I was of course delighted by my oh so clever idea of including Superman in the reflection. Right. Only this whole setup would probably not have kept Superman from throwing this supposed burglar off the roof without looking twice.
Nope. A more eye-level encounter was needed. Superman has to be impressed.
Well, this is boring. Back to the drawing board.
So, this was my final offer. A bit more dynamic, I hope, a bit more drama.
Another discarded idea. Again, I liked the angle. And again, I had to agree with Cyc´s critique, that the pose looked to passive. Batman´s not swooshing, he´s dropping. But damn, I still like this angle! :D
Before I bow out for today, two more sketches for the story. This time, Superman meets Bruce, and it looks like this will be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
