A life almost extinguished
while life
moves endlessly
about me
(the atoms they dance
with cells
and electrons
and
meaning,
briefly creating
these towers
that we try to be)
I almost drowned in misery,
in the melancholy
of a beautiful child
prematurely stolen
from the indifferent arms
of time
and yet we continue
to shuffle aimlessly
with ostensible purity
of purpose
we forget
why we are here
sometimes
(to leave the ground
that we have stood upon
better
than how we found it,
to hold our hearts
up high)
you combat
death
with phantoms
and dreams of God's
heaven
but this corporeality
is all that we have
(It's why
I can't see you
go)
Life is fragile and transient
embattled and continually searching
for freedom
Ephemeral lights
are given
to us
to display to the world
for a brief
connection
of moments
that we call
our lives
(of time
we are given precious little,
but we are tangled
in the truth
that we try
to make tangible)
What if
Without the life
we grasp
and
After death
we are just
What ifs?
