I've resisted writing about Dr. Who a.) because I'm way behind everyone else, watching it as it airs on Sci-Fi, if you can imagine, oh the horror, and b.) ...I wasn't sure I liked it. I mean, I love Christopher Eccleston, and I like Billie Piper, and I'm fascinated by the Bad Wolf thing - where is it going? - and I was certainly entertained, sure, but...well...the first couple eps...are just sort of...silly. I mean, the dancing mannequins? The face trampoline? The pigs in spaaaaaace?
It's like how Rygel is my least favorite character on Farscape, followed by Pilot, because every time I try to explain to someone how awesome the show is or how John/Aeryn is The Greatest Love Story Ever Told, Rygel'll float across the screen and I'll have to say, oh, yeah, and there's Muppets in it too. [Which is not to dis the accomplishments of Farscape or puppetry in general: my favorite Angel ep of all time is probably "Smile Time"...but, let's face it, it's not because of the great drama and epic emotion the story engenders. What was I talking about?]
Oh, right. The point is that what I'll call 'puppet sci-fi' requires a greater suspension of disbelief and is therefore less accessible than Firefly or BSG or even ST:TNG, which are, at the end of the day, just people who happen to float around in space. It's a step further when you're dealing with people with massive facial prosthetics and another step more when you're dealing with time travel. It's yet another remove from our reality, which is a hard enough sell as is.
Thank god for the actorly stylings of CE and BP, then, for grounding it with their awesomeness (an ep like "The Unquiet Dead" out-and-out sucks without them). I've mentioned before my extreme love for the
kooky angsty male leads, and god knows Eccleston comes through in spades. But that leads me to another problem. I've never watched The Doctor before this. Because I have no frame of reference for a 30-year backstory and the body-switching thing, and because I'm so attached to Nine and the performance and everything Eccleston brings to the role, I can't imagine anyone else playing the Doctor, and I'm truly dreading his departure. The ears! The grin! The jacket! The glare! The urge to comfort him with my body!
I have faith, though, not least because all of LJ seems twitterpated by the new guy. And I will definitely keep watching, because
"Father's Day" wrecked me, and because "Fantastic!" sounds so much better in a British accent, and because really, what the fuck is this Bad Wolf?
(Man. I gotta upload some new icons.)
