Day 15 - Warnings - What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a story?
I'll be honest. I hate warnings. When you buy a book, they usually don't come with a list of warnings on the back, so it has always felt indulgent and overly PC to see warnings on fics. I understand about triggers (trust me, I have my own), but those can vary so much from person to person that it's impossible to predict how somebody might react to a story. Plus, in the fic world, if you're *really* worried about a trigger, all you have to do is ask the author. Fic authors are much more accessible than a lot of professional authors (though in this electronic age, that disparity is dissolving). Or, ask other readers. Given my druthers, I'd eliminate warnings entirely. (I'm also really annoyed/frustrated with a growing faction within the e-romance community that wants warnings on books for things they don't like to read, like any sort of het contact in an m/m book, or slash content in a het story, but that's another rant, lol.)
However, I know it's expected, and I'll do what I can to accommodate it. I do it most often with NC17 ratings, since the purpose for those can vary widely. So I'll try to say if it's for violence or sex that's beyond vanilla. I've also done a warning for a kind of noncon scene before, as well as the hint of miscarriage or actual character death. I don't warn for strange stuff. I don't think I'm that sort of writer, to be honest, though I also didn't go back through all my fics to see if there was something I might have forgotten.
