LOS ANGELES -- A teenager was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old woman in Inglewood, police announced Monday.
Inglewood police Chief Ronald Banks said the 16-year-old male suspect, whose name is being withheld because of his age, was arrested on suspicion of murder.
"Even though it lends small solace to them, it will be just a bit more closure for this grieving family because there is a suspect in this case that we've arrested," Banks said at a news conference at the Inglewood Police Department.
Britany Veal was gunned down about 10:25 p.m. Friday near 118th Place and Lemoli Avenue.
The teen had just graduated from high school and was college-bound. She was with a 19-year-old man who told police someone came up to them and opened fire.
The man, who was wounded in the attack, took her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Veal's mother, Cynthia, said she was "so grateful the Lord provided the detectives that we have, the community, the outpouring of support to make this arrest possible."
Police said the investigation is continuing and more arrests are possible.
