don't forget to comment! let me know which songs you liked. XD note: you DO NOT have to be a livejournal member to leave a comment.

Title: Embers of Love
Artist: Mich Gerber featuring Imogen Heap
Album: Amor Fati
Genre: Trip-Hop
Time/Size: 4:26/4.07MB
Comments: all right, this is gonna sound kinda odd, BUT. this song? reminds me of Death Note. not for the lyrics, but for the melody. and for the fact that it's what my sister and I listened to while reading Death Note, 'cause it kinda FELT like it, you know? XD; this song is basically cello with Imogen's beautiful vocals singing over it. the song is dark, rich, and Imogen's vocals are PERFECT, light and breathy but strong at the same time. you don't quite get to experience the full range of her voice, unfortunately, but it blends beautifully with the slow cello melody. the whole thing feels kind of rainy, kind of like a dark night, kind of like the middle of winter. not quite sure how to explain it, but DAMN is it good.

I paint the two of us on a canvas in chains
I hung it on the wall so the story sustains and I layer
the colors with care in veils with the sky broader than
an ocean and higher than high

I will remember these embers of love
and I'll never take it down cemented in its socket as
long as I love

well lucky you to have me by your side
never would you know never could you decide
taking my hands as your own, cover it in gold
leave me for a moment and I watch you grow old

I will remember these embers of love
and I'll never take it down cemented in its socket as
long as I love
these embers of love
I will remember these embers of love

Title: Silence (Poem Version)
Artist: Delerium feat. Sarah McLachlan
Album: Poem
Genre: Trip-Hop/Pop/New Age
Time/Size: 4:05/3.77MB
Comments: I'm not entirely sure what genre to put this under, so those were the closest I could find. XD; the genre given by the CD itself when I ripped it was rock, but uhm...yeah. definitely NOT rock music. let's start by saying that the fact that it's performed by Sarah McLachlan should be reason enough to download it; the woman has one of the most beautiful and unique voices I've EVER heard. the song itself is dark and dreamy, with airy synth, clear, sharp piano, and a dash of Gregorian chanting that combines to form a piece of music that feels like wandering through some enchanted fantasy-land. the thing I've noticed about the music on this CD is that, no matter how synth-ie it gets, there's something very natural about it. I've listened to it just walking through the woods, and it fits perfectly. for the record, there are TWO versions of this song; the original was featured on Delerium's "Karma" album, and had an extra verse and thus, was longer.

Give me release
Witness me
I am outside
Give me peace
Heaven holds a sense of wonder
And I wanted to believe that I'd get caught up
When the rage in me subsides

In this white wave I am sinking in this silence
In this white wave in this silence I believe

I can't help this longing
Comfort me
I can't hold it all in
If you won't let me
Heaven holds a sense of wonder
And I wanted to believe that I'd get caught up
When the rage in me subsides

In this white wave
I am sinking
In this silence
In this white wave
In this silence I believe
I have seen you in this white wave you are silent
You are breathing in this white wave
I am free

Title: Stolen Child
Artist: Loreena McKennitt
Album: Elemental
Genre: New Age
Time/Size: 5:07/7.04MB
Comments: let me start off my saying that I ADORE this woman. the lyrics to this song are actually a poem of the same name, written by W.B. Yeats, with slight adaptations by Loreena. the melody to this is dark, melodious, almost lullaby-like. the story is about fairies taking away a child to their world, and the song SOUNDS like something you'd hear in a fairy-world. Loreena's vocals are, much like Imogen's, light and breathy, but strangely rich, and while there's something a little odd about it, it is, without a doubt, beautiful. Loreena's harp is beautiful, and between it and the odd synth in the background, the piece almost glitters. the addition of garbled, muted recordings of barking dogs give it a chilling, otherwordly feel that I ADORE, and given Celtic mythology is actually very correct (barking dogs were considered a warning that something from the world of the Sidhe, the fairies and gods, was roaming the earth). also, the imagery the lyrics provoke, courtesy of Yeats of course, is simply BREATHTAKING.

Where dips the rocky highland
Of Sleuth Wood in the lake
There lies a leafy island
Where flapping herons wake
The drowsy water-rats
There we've hid our fairy vats
Full of berries
And of reddest stolen cherries.

Chorus:
Come away, oh human child
To the waters and the wild
With a fairy hand in hand
For the world's more full of weeping
Than you can understand.

Where the wave of moonlight glosses
The dim grey sands with light
By far off furthest Rosses
We foot it all the night
Weaving olden dances
Mingling hands and mingling glances
Till the moon has taken flight
To and fro we leap
And chase the frothy bubbles
While the world is full of troubles
And is anxious in its sleep.

Chorus

Where the wandering water gushes
From the hills above Glen-Car
In pools among the rushes
That scarce could bathe a star
We seek for slumbering trout
And whispering in their ears
Give them unquiet dreams
Leaning softly out
From ferns that drop their tears
Over the young streams.

Chorus

Away with us he's going
The solemn-eyed
He'll hear no more the lowing
Of the calves on the warm hillside
Or the kettle on the hob
Sing peace into his breast
Or see the brown mice bob
Round and round the oatmeal chest.

For he comes, the human child
To the waters and the wild
With a fairy hand in hand
For the world's more full of weeping
Than you can understand.

Title: Spark
Artist: Tori Amos
Album: Tales of a Librarian
Genre: Pop
Time/Size: 4:13/3.90MB
Comments: maa~ pop was the best genre I could think of, but...Tori Amos isn't really pop. *huff* ANYWAY. Tori's voice is gorgeous, with a rather unique cadence. looking at the lyrics, you can TOTALLY tell she was on drugs while writing them, but there's a lot of meaning behind them that's hard to pick up and is utterly astounding once you do. I'm not going to get into that, though, 'cause no one wants to hear it. XD; anyway. fitting with this week's theme, this song is dark and eerie. the main melody is performed on a synthesized guitar, and she sings through a synthesizer for much of the piece. first time I heard this, the melody of the verses sent a shiver down my spine, and the way her voice changes from rich to breathy is fascinating. the bridge, like most of her songs, doesn't really seem to fit with the rest of the song at first, but after you've listened to it for a while you can see the ways the work together. her piano playing? is beautiful.

She's afraid of the light in the dark

She's convinced she could hold back a glacier
But she couldn't keep Baby alive
Doubting if there's a woman in there somewhere
Here

You say you don't want it again
And again but you don't really mean it
You say you don't want it
This circus we're in
But you don't you don't really mean it
You don't really mean it
if the Divine master plan is perfection
Maybe next I'll give Judas a try
Trusting my soul to the ice cream assassin
Here

You say you don't want it again
And again but you don't really mean it
You say you don't want it
This cirucs we're in
But you don't you don't really mean it
You don't really mean it
How may fates turn around in the overtime
Ballerinas that have fins that you'll never find
You thought that you were the bomb yeah
Well so did I
Say you don't want it
Say you don't want it
Say you don't want it again
And again but you don't really mean it
Say you don't want it
This circus we're in
But you don't you don't really mean it
You don't really mean it

Title: Spies
Artist: Coldplay
Album: Parachutes
Genre: Pop/Rock
Time/Size: 5:18/9.14MB
Comments: definitely my favorite song off of their first album, "Spies" is both typical and un-typical of Coldplay music. not that being typical of them is a bad thing, because they're as popular as they are for a reason. XD; it's slow, dark, eerie, and Chris's vocals are perfect, gorgeous. with the exception of the almost siren-like beginning, at first it sounds like your typical Coldplay song, slow acoustic guitar with a simple melody and vocals with a tiny hint of echo. but after the verses is a small burst of guitar and drums, which is quite possibly the reason I love this song so much. during the verses, as well, there's a subtle, synthesized guitar rift in the background, and the whole thing adds a nice touch to an already awesome song. the lyrics are rather paranoid, and the music around them just amplifies the feeling.

I awake to find no peace of mind
I said how do you live
as a fugitive
down here, where I cannot see so clear
I said what do I know
show me the right way to go

and the spies came out of the water
and you're feeling so bad 'cos you know
that the spies hide out in every corner
but you can't touch them no
'cos they're all spies

they're all spies

I awake to see that no-one is free
we're all fugitives
look at the way we live
down here, I cannot sleep from fear, no
I said which way do I turn
oh I forget everything I learn

and the spies came out of the water
and you're feeling so bad 'coz you know
that the spies hide out in every corner
but you can't touch them no
'cos they're all spies

they're all spies

and if we don't hide here
they're gonna find us
and if we don't hide now
they're gonna catch us where we sleep
and if we don't hide here
they're gonna find us

and the spies came out of the water
and you're feeling so good 'cos you know
that those spies hide out in every corner
they can't touch you no
'cos they're just spies
they're just spies
they're just spies
they're just spies
they're just spies
