Their friendship was filled with hate and Jonghyun tried to fix it. One by one, his questions got answered. (I know it sucks, summaries are the hardest part of introduction c: )
A/N:This is the result when you try to force yourself yo write. i think it's bearable. This is a fic challenge, seulrin-unnie wrote the version A (we have the same title and prompt but different stories). This fic is inspired by the poem "Tonight I Can Write The Saddest Line" by Pablo Neruda. All thanks to him!

It was past nine and was dark already. The only lights left were the lights inside some of the houses and it wasn’t enough to picture the road. Taemin shivered as he nervously drags his feet anywhere. Silence filled the place and it crept him.

One step. Two steps. Three steps.

A bang echoed behind him, he quickly looked back to see if someone was there and saw nothing but pitch black. Scared, he quickened his pace. He tried to convince himself that he’s safe and will get home in a minute. His feet were getting numb and tired. His vision is getting blurry and his body felt weak. He hasn’t slept for two days and the effects are starting to show.

Why now? He thought.

He continued until his knees gave up and he passed out. Everything was dark.

Taemin pushed through the crowd to find his seat. It was Thursday, it’s been their tradition to watch baseball and grab a cocoa after the game. A tradition that doesn’t exist anymore but Taemin chose to continue, alone. Five minutes later, he could see their spot. The five seats that was theirs and is now occupied by other people.  The first one was already taken by a fat lady with a dog on her lap, are dogs even allowed inside? Beside her was a child completely focused in licking his lollipop. The third one, his seat, was vacant. The next one, to his surprise, was taken by someone familiar.

It was him. The man who was always there for him, the man who left years ago, the man he loved. Kim Jonghyun.

He froze in his place, forgetting that he was standing in the middle of a crowd.  He blinked once, twice, thrice. Jonghyun was still there, sitting on his seat beside Taemin’s. Thoughts of whether to sit or not to sit were battling on his mind when he heard a familiar voice.

“You better grab your seat if you want to watch the game comfortably” Taemin turned and saw an old friend of his seating two seats away from where he was.

“Minho-hyung” Taemin said, voice almost a whisper. He can’t help but smile when he saw the older “You’re here”

“Well, it’s Thursday” He answered, eyes still glued at the baseball diamond. He could see Taemin smile at the corner of his eye and it suddenly made him embarrassed so he quickly added “Well, It’s not that really. I’m just free so I decided to kill some time”

Minho adjusted his shades and crossed his arms awkwardly while Taemin was still there. He was waiting for this, he thought. He’s so sure that Taemin was waiting for them to appear one by one like all is forgiven. Everything was not yet forgiven of course. Hate was still there, almost forgotten but was still there.

“You must be really bored to spend your free time on a baseball game, if I’m not mistaken, you’d rather watch soccer than this” Taemin and Minho turned around and saw Kibum sitting behind Minho.

“Kibum-hyung!” Taemin shouted with joy grabbing the attention of some people.

“Ssh! You don’t have to shout! I agree with Minho, sit down before it’s too late!” Kibum hissed.

“I’m just happy!”

“I guess you’re still the same then” Jinki smiled, he was sitting in front of Minho.

Taemin wanted to cry just by looking at them. Minho was wearing a white polo which is neatly tucked in his slacks. Judging by his looks, Taemin is guessing that he’s now a successful businessman.  Ten years ago he was always wearing a baggy shorts and loose shirt. Ten years ago, they were all young. Ten years ago, Minho wanted to be a soccer player, Kibum wanted to be fashion designer, Jinki wanted to be a singer, Jonghyun wanted to be a husband and Taemin wanted to be his wife.

Ten years ago.

“Well, aren’t you going to sit?” Minho asked. Taemin nodded and took the closest one.

The game went on and from time to time, Jonghyun would glance at their side. It took all his strength not to move from his seat when he saw the four talking. I guess everything was the same when I left, he sighed.  Appearance wise, Taemin was the only one that hadn’t change. The three were all wearing a semi-formal look in different ways, Taemin was the only one sporting a casual look.

After the game, the four stood up and gathered at one corner just outside the exit.

“I can’t believe you Hyungs came!” Taemin said with the same smile he’s been wearing throughout the game.

“It’s just a baseball game Taemin” Kibum rolled his eyes.

“Yeah! But it’s our tradition to watch a baseball game every Thursday! Remember?”

“Yeah but” Jinki forced a smiled.

“Hyung, you all came! Don’t tell me we will still pretend that we’re not friends!” Taemin waited for them to say something but they all just stood there and avoided his gaze “What? We’re not friends anymore?”

“It’s been ten years Taemin” Jinki said, his voice almost a whisper.

Taemin’s eyes were swollen when he ordered a cocoa and took a seat at the far corner of the shop. He stared at his drink, not in the mood to take a sip. His fingers continued to tap the cup he’s holding.

It’s been ten years Taemin.

His grip tightened remembering the words Jinki told him. It’s been ten years, but Taemin still remembers every single time they all had. After they all broke up, Taemin had been alone. Everyone agreed that they should all separate ways, everyone except Taemin. He’s been doing the same routine when they were all together. Group Study every Sunday, spending a lazy afternoon at the park every weekday, watching a baseball game and grabbing a cocoa after that every thrusday, breakfast at Tiffany’s every Saturday and Friday, and other stuffs. He didn’t have the time to let go of everything unlike everyone.

“I guess I’d have a cocoa”

“I have some free time to have one too”

“It wouldn’t hurt if I join you”

He heard them. They were already seated at the vacant chairs, smiling at him. Tears were forming again and he did all he can to not let them fall.

“Hyung” He smiled at them.

“Well, don’t just smile at us. Aren’t you going to offer us some drinks?” Kibum laughed.

They were laughing at every stories they shared. Everyone has a story to tell and Taemin patiently listened to them. It was llike they never left.

Everything was perfect until Jonghyun showed up. There was an awkward pause before Minho decided to leave.

“I still have things to do” He said and immediately left. Taemin watched him disappear, again.

“I don’t think I have to stay here too” Kibum said, standing up.

“But hyung, we still have a lot of catching up to do”

“We don’t Taemin. We’re not friends anymore. More like, strangers to each other” Kibum smiled “But it was nice seeing you again”

“Taemin, a lot has happened in ten years” Jinki stayed on his seat. He was always the last one to leave when things are out of hand. “The moment we let go, we can’t turn back. The questions we left unanswered will forever be buried, along with our friendship”

Taemin watched them all leave. An hour ago, he thought everything was back to normal. And now he watched them leave him alone again, all of them except Jonghyun. He was there standing beside his table, staring at the ground to avoid his eyes.

“Hey” Taemin held his hand “You’re back”

“I’m sorry” was all Jonghyun said.

It was shaking. The ground was shaking. He groaned and tried to stand up when he realized that someone was carrying him on his back. All he could remember before passing out was the dark road.

“Where are we and who are you?” He asked. The stranger didn’t answer, instead he adjusted Taemin on his back and continued walking. “Hey”

The stranger stopped and put Taemin down. Confused, Taemin faced the stranger but the stranger wasn’t looking at him. He was staring at the ground.  It took him a minute to realize that they were standing in front of his house. “Thanks, I guess” He said and got no response again.

He opened the door a little when something just hit him. “By the way, how did you know…” His words vanished when the small light from his house escaped, revealing half of the stranger’s face. It was familiar. It was a face he’s been looking for for two? Three? Five years? He can’t remember. It was a long time ago but not too long to forget him. He hesitated before saying “Thank you” and went inside.

“You’re welcome” The stranger whispered when the door was close “and I missed you Lee Taemin”

Jonghyun stared at the dark road. There were only five streetlamps and all of it was turned off. Except for the last one and it was enough to light half of the road.
