This morning, having woken up early enough to consider taking public transportation instead of driving in to Manhattan and not feeling like taking the bus over the George Washington Bridge into Harlem and riding the subway down, I decided to try out the relatively new ferry service that now runs from Edgewater, NJ down to Pier 79 in Midtown Manhattan.
It's funny but if I hadn't gotten into drifting, I would have had a hard time explaining why I enjoy riding in boats. But as I rode the ferry in, I realized that I enjoy it primarily for two reasons. First of all is that the way the boat rocks forward and backward as it goes over waves reminds me of the undulations you would find on a nice, hilly road. It's sort of like a really, really, really small version of the thrill you get from going over a hill on a roller coaster. The other reason is that when boats turn, what they are actually doing is drifting.
I'm not sure, though, if this reasoning explains my like of hydrofoils. I guess I'll have to ponder it some more.
