Yes, Wee Gene received his kayak and it's been great fun hitting the water, he in said 'yak and I in canoe. Last time out, guitarist Karl joined us. I had always envisioned Karl as a product of the city: growing up in DC, living in urban Columbus, etc. I came to discover that he was an avid Boy Scout, has a sizeable repertoire of useful on-the-water knots, and is a skilled paddler with the ability to execute several formal strokes (rather than the more typically applied random waving of the paddle about in vain hope the craft is propelled forward). Kudos, Karl!
I've been plotting a workshop at Stone Lab to teach college students seeking agency internships the use of various fish-sampling gears. In planning, I called friends at the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the Ohio Department of Natral Resources-Division of Wildlife for advice on what they'd like their technicians to know. I was surprised by offers to instruct from both agencies. What better way to create a marketable student intern than advance instruction from the employers themselves!? A few of us are planning to meet at Stone Lab on the 23rd to begin refining curriculum. I'm actually pretty excited about the potential.
The three-weekend wedding marathon to which I'd alluded was expanded to four or five (still don't have confirmation on 29 July yet) bringing the total summer tally to seven to nine weddings (also waiting on a maybe in mid September). That's plenty enough for me. This leaves only two weekends in the whole of my summer that are not in some way scheduled. The breakdown is as follows:
1) mandolin-guitar duo (me on mandolin, my preferred ensemble and that least worked): 1 (or maybe two depending on mid September)
2) flute-violin-guitar trio: 1
3) solo guitars and mandolins: 1 (or maybe 2-3 depending on 29 July and mid September)
4) flute-guitar duo: 4
Excerpt from recent mass mailing:
The next informal meeting of the CGS falls at 1:00 pm on 21 July (just after my late-morning wedding gig at the Park of Roses, woo-hoo!). Nothing planned but the usual: come on out to play some "classical" music on your guitar (...lute, mandolin, gittern, balalaika, ukulele, tiple, English guittar, 6-course mandolino, citole, cetre, viola da mano, or whatever), or just casually socialize and listen. As always, we'll be at the Borders Books, Music & Cafe, 4545 Kenny Rd., Columbus, OH, 43220 (at the intersection of Kenny and Henderson Rds). Also as always, the setting is casual and supportive in the extreme. Again, the professional dates on the 2007-08 concert series are finalized. If you haven't seen who's on the roster, come on by, grab a flier, and eagerly anticipate.
The season includes:

Finally, Clare Callahan of the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music will host her annual and excellent guitar workshop 23-29 July. The event features excellent evening concerts by participants and faculty (including the inimitable Stanley Yates and Carlos Perez) and piles of education of huge value to any aspiring guitarist. Visit the workshop web site for details:
http://ccmguitarworkshop.org/ I'm planning to attend Stan's concert on the 26th. Stan will be playing two very early concerti by Viotti and Doisy with string quartet accompaniment. I'm looking forward to it.
Then off to a Lake Erie LaMP conference (Lakewide Management Plan) hosted by the Ohio Environmental Council in Toledo that Friday-Saturday (27-28 July)...and a tentative wedding gig that Sunday (the 29th). If there is to be any more paddling in July, it will have to be the 22nd.
