Had a wedding gig yesterday. I had committed to it long in advance. After I was booked, my old friend Kelly wrote to invite me to her wedding that same day. My gig was in East Liverpool and she was marrying in Cincinnati, a solid five or more hours away. No chance of doing both. Crap.

As I was packing mic, guitars, mandolin, etc. for my gig yesterday, my mother called. My younger brother, father of the nephew who was killed by asthma two years ago, when driving his motorcycle home from work had an accident and was killed. I couldn't imagine canceling the wedding gig at the last minute, especially because I'd have to tell them why (what a bummer that would be). I don't know the groom at all well, but he is an acquaintance. I apologized to the groom in advance for the potential for mid-gig distraction and told him I'd e-mail him the why of it all later. Gig went well enough.

I then drove to visit my brother Michael's family. Drove home last night. Spent around 14 hours on the road yesterday. Funeral is Wednesday. Wee Gene and I will be pallbearers.

Michael is survived by his wife and two sons. The eldest will be joining us on Manitoulin Island for vacation this year. I am suddenly feeling more paternal towards them both.

Had hoped to go paddling today. Instead, spent a quiet day walking in the woods with my own wife and kids.

I am sad. Will post more on pending musical doings when I'm a bit more collected.
