omggggggggg >< had an interview today for a freelance job and the owner pissed me off so much during the interview! maybe things are different in the land of the rising sun or my definition/understanding of "flexible" work hours and "paid per project" is different from the rest of the world because when i read those two things i figured this job isn't steady and it's definitely not full time.
i get there, he has me fill in this questionnaire about things i know and stuff (which the top half i guess was relevant) but the bottom was kinda random... like UK prime minister (who i know changed recently but his name escapes me), japanese pm (who i know changed recently/or will change soon and used to be the financial minister or something), tokyo governor (no clue), population of japan, tokyo and the world(?), and something about the un... and i knew like one XD and he makes a joke (though obviously derogatory) about how i obviously didn't study anything other than design... hello, i applied a for a job that's about laying out stories for people learning english -_- and i loved how there was no mention about canada at all XD
so i like failed the socially aware aspect of the interview, fine, i live under a rock. then he goes and questions why i'm in japan, why i'm getting a job when i'm interning, how reliable i am because i have no "real" work experience (because interning obviously doesn't count, why would anyone waste their time doing it at all?)
why are you in japan? i told him the graphic design community and the choices available to designers interested me and were very different from canada and i wanted to experience it, which was a "stupid" answer according to him because he answers with "so you're only in japan because the design interests you?" lemme see, i'm a graphic designer... and i'm interested in japanese graphic design... that seems like a logical reason to me? what was he expecting? i want to earn big bucks and take over the japanese graphic world by storm?
then he's all, if you're interning how will you work? and i told him the hours are pretty flexible as long as i have advance notice... and he just goes, so if i need you for 2 weeks straight you can do it? (your post said working hours flexible... i assumed flexibility on both our parts but obviously the employee doesn't count)
and his dismissal of my experience at armstrong! gah, i think that pissed me off more than anything else. i told him it started off as an unpaid internship for experience and that after about 3-4 months they would pay me to do freelance work (which lasted another 2-3 months). hello, like what you're offering me =_= but apparently internship turned freelance isn't "real" work, no, it's like being in school where deadlines don't apply and we have loooooooots of time to plug away at projects (yeah right, we have a presentation tomorrow and we need all this stuff done tonight please!)
how the hell is anyone supposed to get experience if internship doesn't count and school doesn't count and they won't give you a chance for a job because you have no experience? i can't even decide if it's a japanese thing, or a british thing (he's either british or austrailian) or just a holier than thou thing >< i hope i ace their "trial" period and can shove it in their face! he even said it doesn't take much creativity or real complicated layout work and it's more just time consuming adjusting to fit but he doubts my experience and ability to work within a timeline even though i've been using indesign for 6 years ~_~
the pay better be close to the 3,000/hr they advertised, i don't think i'll settle for less than 2,500-ish (that's what i got paid at armstrong *and* they provided lunch!) grah, i wonder if i should actually work for this company >< i'm already ranting so much and it was just an interview XD but money would be sweet and as long as they pay more than 2,000/hr it's about the same as me teaching english XD that and it's paid by the project and they have a ton so it's almost steady work but hopefully with the ability to split into chunks.
intern was interesting today. we were making a proposal of ideas for the new wing of the hospital and even though the presentation was in japanese it was interesting to sit in. i have never spent so much time image searching for a proposal... except for maybe the kraft pitch before i left armstrong but that was a little difference since i was looking at stock photography to apply to the ideas... this was looking for representation of our ideas... (which is really hard sometimes! harder than stock search!)
intern seems like it'll get busier/more interesting! if it's a choice between that layout job and unpaid intern... i'm totally ditching the job (unless the pay is really, *really* good), screw them and their we're doing *you* a huge favour by "trying you out" and we're taking a risk by hiring you on a freelance basis. yeah, if you doubt my skills and experience that much why did you bother setting up an interview? you're obviously either not overflowing with applicants or you're just trying to get cheap labour =_=
