Getting Closer to Home [Closed to Hermione]

Sooner or later Dean figured the beast would get someone he cared about. Maybe Red had been just a convenient lay, and a pretty friggen good one, but it was hard for him not to care about the few people he'd met on the Island ( Read more... )

It seemed that Hermione's Avada Kedavra curse had done at least some good. The animal had taken a good chunk out of her shoulder and upper arm, but it turns out the only reason she blacked out was because it knocked her back onto the sidewalk and she hit her head. The spell must have scared the thing away because she was alive and it didn't attempt to do more than it's initial grab for her. She didn't kill it. If what she suspected was true, the killing curse wasn't ever going to do more than scare it away anyway because it technically wasn't a living being.

When Dean appeared in the doorway of her hospital room, she managed a weak smirk. "I much prefer to take the Big Bad Hunter," she said lethargically, wincing a little as she shifted in the bed to see him better. Yes, Harry had revealed when she had woken what Dean and his brother were doing on the case and it made her all the more certain she could trust him to kill the thing. Still, it didn't stop a rush of memory flooding back to her about being attack and she choked back a sob of shock.

Dean reached out to touch his fingers to her hair as he tried to keep from touching her injured shoulder. "Hey, hey... it's okay. You're safe. That mojo you do so well clearly worked even if it only scared the thing off." Harry had supplied Dean and Sam with the details of the attack, and Dean couldn't help but sound a little impressed. "Most chicks would've just screamed and stood there doing nothing."

He leaned down to try and catch her gaze again. "Exactly where are you planning on taking the Big Bad Hunter, anyway?"

"If I was a guy, saying I pulled my wand could actually sound like quite a feat," Hermione said through the tears. "I'm usually not this weak. Let's blame the drugs. At least, that's what I'll say if anyone hears I'm bawling like a baby."

She wiped the tears away with the tips of her fingers and laughed a little. "He wants to be taken again, does he?"

"Anyone accuses you of bawling like a baby and I'll kick their ass," Dean promised. "You're allowed to get a bit emotional after what you went through, Red. I won't hold it against you. However, I will need to ask if you remember anything. Me and Sam could really use a break with this thing."

Dean smirked and helped brush the tears away with his thumb. "He's hardly going to object since he had so much fun the last time. If he keeps talking about himself in the second, or third person, then he might just wind up taking his own life first."

Hermione put her hand over her mouth to stifle a laugh. "Or Red might just have to take it for him." She looked around. "My bag. I have information for you. I was on my way to see you and your brother when it happened. I went to school in Scotland and being a witch, we studied magical creatures extensively. And Dark Arts. Couple those together and it set me on the right track. Not quite a reaper, not quite a werewolf, not quite an Animagus, but a mixture of all three elements."

Dean waggled his eyebrows. "There is absolutely nothing wrong with you takin' it." He left her side to locate the bag and brought up onto the end of the bed so he could find the information she was talking about. "I promise I'm not paying too much attention to what I find in here. I know a girl's bag is supposed to remain a mystery--hey, wait--is that I think it is?"

Dean turned his head to look at her as he smirked widely and chuckled. "You sly little witch. Always knew the book types were the kinky ones."

He took out a pile of papers and sat down in the chair beside her. "Sam's really going to be pissed that you did his job for him. Plus you're prettier, and I don't think he'd be able to cope knowing you out researched him and out prettied him. He just might cry."

"Dig a bit deeper and you'll find my furry handcuffs," Hermione warned, smirking. She watched him sort through her papers. "Just tell him I did it to get into your pants. That's a language any male will understand. Plus, you ask Harry and he'll tell you I'll out-research anyone. I have honed quite a stamina over the years."

She went to reach for her notes, but the injury stopped her short and she cursed colourfully, ending with a snippy, "Damnit!" She exhaled sharply in frustration. "Celtic Lore, Scottish mythology. Fairy Dog, or roughly translated in Gaelic to Cu Sith. A death omen, only seen through the eyes of the Scots."

"I think I'm starting to work that bit out for myself," Dean murmured as he leafed through the pages and pages of research she'd done. Even Sam wasn't this meticulous. Then again they could usually find what they were hunting a lot quicker than this Cu Sith thing.

"I am so trying to come up with a decent Fairy Dog joke right now but I got nothing." He couldn't help but smile at her cursing. "Need some soap to wash that mouth of yours, Red? Alright, so it's a death omen. Death omens we can deal with, but why only attack women?"

Hermione went to shrug but thought better of it. "Luck?" she suggested. "I tried to see any reference to female victims, but there are none. That was my stumbling block. Could be us girls were just stupid enough to be out alone the night of the attacks. Could be we got in the way of it's intended victims. Could be there is one female on this island destined for death and it's trying to find her, only mistaking other people for her."

"So am I going to get my ass handed to me if I tell you to never go out walking at night alone again?" Dean asked as he watched her closely for any signs of anger. "So if we get rid of this thing is that woman still going to die? It kinda makes sense for the Cu Sith to maybe get its wires crossed. And not just because I don't want to get in trouble for supporting a theory that calls women stupid."

Hermione smirked and searched his eyes. "I could always deal with your arse in other ways. Unfortunately, it does seem whoever it is looking for is destined for death. On a small island, it could be confused or disoriented. But if you kill it, the woman will just die how she is intended without getting torn up by a beast. Considering it's origin, I'd go with chances being the woman is of Scottish heritage... at least I hope my theory on it beinig a woman is correct and it's not just looking for someone Scottish," she added quietly.

"You know someone who likes kilts?" Dean asked as he frowned. He looked back down at the research and let out a frustrated sound. "You know, when I do this with Sam he doesn't make me read every damn page to get to the how I kill it part. Think maybe you could fill me in, sweetheart? Then I promise when this is all over you can deal with my ass anyway you want."

Hermione gave a slight nod. "One of my closest friends is Scottish. He's here." She cleared her throat. "Harry's ex," she knew she had to add.

She shook her head apologetically. "I didn't get that far, sorry. Books and words I can do. Hunting? Well, I hear you know a couple of pretty decent hunters." Her small hand curled softly around his wrist. "I need you to find it and kill it as quick as you can. On the chance it is looking for someone Scottish."

Dean's eyebrows went up, but he said nothing. He did wonder if Hermione had shared her theory with Harry though. He'd have to be sure to keep his mouth shut around Potter just in case. Use a little of that tact that his brother was so good with.

He leaned forward as he covered her hand with his free one, the papers falling to the floor. "You got my word, Red."

Hermione let out a small sigh of relief and smiled. "We'll talk about that arse dealing when your schedule is clear," she promised and squeezed his hand gratefully.

"Look forward to it, sweetheart." Dean let go of her hand and reached down to pick up her research before he stood up. "I got a brother to go drag from his den of sex, so I better get going. Soon as this thing is taken care of I'll let you know."

He hesitated and looked around awkwardly for a moment before he leaned down to press a kiss to her forehead. "I'm sorry you got dragged into this, Red."
