BABE I LOVE YOU BUT I JUST ASKED YOU TO EXPLAIN FANDOMS TO ME IF THEY'RE FANDOMS OR ELSE I WILL MAKE THINGS UP
okay so i'll just make it up entirely since i sorta barely remember reading that book
john is small and fits in a teacup, and he is a borrower -- a borrower of things, of souls and darkness and sometimes even the truth
man sherlock would fit better as that but i guess sherlock's a grownup
and sherlock is a detective, he detects
and the thing is, john can sense this -- as can others, others who dwell in the inbetween spaces, in the corners of your eyes and the rustling of the wind behind you and all that stuff
and he is inexplicably drawn to Sherlock, because sherlock is bright, shining in a way things usually aren't because he's coated in death and covered in secrets, but different still, in some way john can't understand
so john sort of follows along, and he's got a finite amount of volume -- and he's normally incorporeal and has a larger "presence"/sense of self, but he can solidify himself too so
hell lets make this a ghosty dead things au too so
so he's not really john, not exactly -- because the thing -- the shadow, the soul, the creature, had followed sherlock AND the original john before, but john died and sherlock carried on afterwards, and whatever
wait wait no, no shrelock was crushed and mourning and hurting, and he hurt so loud that the shadow things, the borrowers, the consumers, the listeners heard him and were drawn to him, and this one in particular
and i guess i just spoiled the ending/twist, but yeah
so there's a small creature and it starts out kinda amorphously shaped, like a blob, or a teacup, or something else small like that, mimicking the things it sees
and sherlock is like "oh that is okay, look its' something mildly amusing to distract me from my grief" (but the real john being dead, and this thing being an eventual mimic will be a twisty kinda ending, so it's really grief but it might look like boredom or ennui or depression (one of the "dark moods" mentioned by ACD))
and its light for a bit (lighter, in comparison), and they have adventures and the creature (let's call him fakejohn) helps sherlock on his cases by pointing out the other things --
other things that are different, that hold secrets, that have stories to tell that it can take and bring to sherlock
and then eventually it sees a photograph of john (though i wouldn't mention that yet on the fic, if this were a fic) and turns into john -- but it's limited by size, so it's a smaller version of john
and at first sherlock's like, shocked/enraged/tantrummy, has no idea how to deal with it, etc etc.
but eventually because of his grief and because it acts like, you know, a small, john-shaped, cute animal, sherlock comes around to it because it reminds him so much of john that he can't help but be grateful for it, even if it isn't intelligent, even if it doesn't have words
and he treats it tenderly, and it's basically each time he sees it it's another twist of the knife in his chest that'd been put there when john had died and never gone away since, and it's really preventing him from healing or getting over it
but he doesn't care, he'd rather wallow in his heartbrokenness than have john not be so very important to him (though i guess this would be hard to express in a fic told from the borrower's pov -- not just of souls, but of images and memories too, then, i guess)
and i mean i guess the eventual end would be the reveal that it's not the real john, that there /was/ a real john
and maybe that'd be with liek a slowly increasing (throughout the fic) amoutn of awareness/sentience/identity (because it's borrowing john's soul too, now, now that it has a focus and an identity and memories of sherlock's to learn from)
and the ending scene would be, the fakejohn, and sherlock crying maybe (is that too much? naw i think not)
so sherlock has johns dog tags (or something else of his uggggh it's lame that they dont' have dogtags for the british military or maybe don't, idk the details, so maybe a medal with his name engraved or some present he'd given sherlock, with an engraving, or something like that)
and he's just having a really shitty day so he grabs the thing and goes to his bed and sits all knees-to-chest and curled in on himself and addresses john (the real john, so basically to thin air, and sherlock names fakejohn john too, in his memory but the reader's meant to think it's just a light "oh and this is how the realjohn got his name" but it's not)
and then sherlock talks about how much he misses him and how much he clings to in order to keep his memory alive (but he calls it something more liek how pathetic heis to keep from forgetting him, or because he can't bear to forget him), and maybe cries for a while
and the thing -- fakejohn, the borrower, the shadow and manifestation of grief and memory and heartbreak -- watches (but can't understand, because ultimately, it's not really sentient)
and
so
that is what happens when you prompt something that i am not actually sure what it was, and i know enough to know that borrowers was probably light because i think it was a kid's book but
yeah
hope you don't mind i did totally warn you <333333
