sherlock doesn't know magic (aso i think this au's alread ybeen done, I haven't got the links, but yeah), timeline-wise john is born in like the early 70s and he's 39 in 2011 which makes him 29 in 2000 and 26ish (give or take my sloppy math) when harry is 17 and defeating the dark lord
so john is an auror with some mediwitch training, homeschooled because private school (hogwarts) is expensive, and he's a halfblood so he has also a medical degree which he got...
when harry is 1 he's like 8 or 9, so he grew up knowing about magic, but he grew up under the shadow of the first voldemort war, and he went to hogwarts and stuff but seriously, shoot a dark wizard in the back and he's dead
so he was homeschooled, but both in wizarding and muggle education, and he went to med school until the second wizarding war (when harry is 14 and voldemort rises, john is 22-23 and finishing his medical degree).
so when john goes into the army, he's really going into the auror squad (or maybe dumbledore's order, or maybe not), because during a war, they'll take whoever -- and when voldemort really rises and takes control, he leave sthe wizarding world; and goes to afghanistan, and cheats on healing people
and harry (potter) saves them but he's really burnt on the ministry and how they were super fascists and stuff, and he likes being in the muggle world more and as long as he doesn't violate the secrets act, he can use little bits of magic so he does that

sherlock's a squib, i think, maybe? or he could be a muggle i mean. i guess it depends on what i want -- okay no i want mycroft to be a muggle, so sherlock's also a muggle, but they both know about magic
mycroft because his involvement in the (muggle) ministry, and sherlock because of mycroft, and they know a little bit about it and mycroft doesn't like it because the wizarding ministry's really holier-than-thou and all that stupid shit about "for your own good"
and ... how do they find out about each other?
john doesn't even have his wand anymore, he just does simple magic (wandless magic) because anything showy isn't a good idea and also technically illegal and so on, and he's pretty level-tempered
but tech doesn't always like him, because his magic kinda futzes with it
also john doesn't know the golden trio, they were too young for that sort o fthing, but he reads the papers hermione publishes because she's integrating muggle/magic world stuff and whatever ,and he's sorta caught up
and
there's a terrorist plot or a death eater plot or some dark magic plot targeting the government and mycroft knows it's magic related but he can't figure it out (charmed anti-muggle) and so he brings it ot sherlock because between the two of them they can probably figure it out
and the paper (a note, maybe, or a threat, or a copy of the daily prophet) is just clues and stuff to them -- words that don't make sense, phrases that don't make sense, palces that dont exist, etc
and they don't hide it from john because mycroft's like "what do you make of this" and sherlock's like "it's in code *squint*" and mycroft's like "it's suspected to do wit a terroist plot"
and john's seeing "MINISTRY OF MAGIC BAFFLED. MYSTERIOUS MUGGLE DEATHS PERSIST. VOLDEMORT BACK YET AGAIN???? READ MORE ON PAGE A3"
while they're all poring over it and like "look here, the repetition of the words in these two sctions, it could be a cipher, do you see the same words i see? yes? great let's write it down and start investigating, can you get more samples of a similar text?"
and john's like "wheeeeelllllp"
and it's really important -- people are dying, the ministry of magic's interfering, etc etc. and it might be wizards but that doesn't mean wizards are invincible anymore (seriously, teargas and a smoke bomb and a gun or taser, and whatever)
so he's like
"um... so this is going ot sound really weird but um... where did you get that can i see it?"
and they let him see it all "yeah it's really hardcod"
and they both realize john's actually reading it (his eyes scan left to right, he never stumbles over words or rereads passages, andwhen he finishes he turns to page A3 to read the restof the article)
and they're like "WAT DO"
and john's like "um yeah"
and mycrof'ts like "YER A WIZARD, HARRY"
and then he helps them yay (maybe more onthis later when it's not late, and when i have more brainjuices to spare for plottin)

Heh. This is really interesting. I guess S and J could meet the same way if John goes to Afghanistan and return injured by a (magical) wound.
I like the terror plot a lot. I never got much beyond "HP AU with squib Sherlock."
I can see John rejecting the wizarding world because of anti-muggle prejudice and then choosing to fight a muggle war because he would still want to fight for people.
I agree would not want John to know the trio, but he would probably know St. Mungo's people and the mediwitch at Hogwarts, and possibly Bill or Charlie Weasley. I would not want Sherlock to know about magic before he meets John, so he could be surprised and amazed by such an unprepossessing person having magic.
