An organ from hell....

So anyone that knows me very well knows I have a strange unexplainable organ fetish... ya know... like pipe organ... the musical instrument. Many also know that the past several years I've been working on building a digital pipe organ. Up to this point it has consisted of a Yamaha keyboard plugged into a PC running specialized organ control software with samples of actual pipe organ pipes loaded in to play through the speakers when I play.

This week I bought an organ console. It's a beautiful Wurlitzer console probably built in the 40's. It is a FULL size console just waiting to be converted into a MIDI instrument. I have - however - run into a snag....

I honestly thought I was buying an old electric organ console. Moving it seemed simple... gut the electronics out of it (since they will all be replaced) and make a fairly light easy to move cabinet. What I REALLY bought is an elecric/pipe organ hybrid. The relay structures are entirely different and it has a 300 pound blower in it. So on Saturday when I showed up with a few friends and a trailer without a ramp and then discovered that the console actually weighs in at about half a ton.... I knew I wouldn't be bringing it home right away.

After a LOT of calls... I DID finally manage to find the correct tools for the job. Organ dollies are REALLY hard to find these days! I need to make my U-Haul reservations yet this evening. It looks like I'm gonna have to take time off work on Tuesday afternoon to make this move happen. Anyone wanna help push and organ on Tuesday (it will be on wheels... no lifting required)???

I have had a week of elation and frustration over this. FINALLY I found the RIGHT console for my project. I just have to push through the barrier of getting it moved. Once I've begun working on the conversion, I will be blogging the process on another site. I will put links in for anyone interested in following it.
