It's been a while since I posted on LJ, largely because it's been a hellish, eventful month.
My awesome boss was offered a new job. She'd told me I'd have a year working for her before she left, so I wasn't expecting her to leave well short of that. I don't blame her, mind you - it's a good move for her, I just wasn't ready to apply for her job - going from deputy chief to chief. But I did. It's an awesome group of folks, who I've come to respect and admire greatly as events in the Middle East have unfolded.
So I applied. So did six other people.
Getting ready for the interviews, while serving as acting chief during three international crises, and answering pre-interview questions from the other six made for three of the worst weeks in my life. I haven't been that stressed since my parents passed. I wasn't able to work out in any regular sense, except for twice a week with the Nazi trainer. I didn't eat well, drank far too much coffee. I tried not to bring it home, but failed. I just wanted to curl up in bed, away from the world, which wasn't fair to Brandon.
I got the job, and was told that there was clear "daylight" between me and the other six.
Then a senior officer decided to go to analytic war with my group on my first day in the new gig. What happened to the honeymoon?
While all that was going down, Brandon and I ran the "Warrior Dash," a hilarious-in-retrospect run up one and a half miles of muddy hills, then over or through five or six mud-soaked obstacle courses. Dumb, but fun. Thanks to my lack of working out and cardio, and all the stress, I didn't exactly break any records, but I finished. Poor Brandon was supportive and kept pace with me when he could have done much better, but it was very sweet. Next year I'll do better. Yeah, next year. We'd gone in a limo rented by one of our friends, and filled with friends who were also running or, more importantly, providing emotional support (thanks Jenny and David!).
Brandon and me, in our Batman and Captain America T-shirts (the group had a superhero theme):
Spent $700 having my garage door fixed, whcih was WAY overdue. Looks like we'll be paying $200 to have the icemaker fixed, and $2000 to have the front yard completely ripped out. What's on the dollar menu at McDonald's?
I'm very much looking forward to the 4th of July - Brandon and I are going to Rehoboth Beach (aka: "Rehomo Beach"), apparently alone - which will be really nice.
