Today I got an unexpected phone call from an acquaintance/friend. Connecting with people* is a nice break from the isolation of studying.
I texted her last week, just checking in because she's getting married next week. She responded with something like, "thanks for checking in, I'll call you later." I didn't think she'd actually call, but she did. Mostly we chatted about the madness of planning a 250-person wedding and moving across the country at the same time (Her fiance lives in Florida). She's generally a calm, zen-like person, but she recently half-jokingly asked her physician-dad for a prescription for Ativan** so she wouldn't have to deal with the anxiety she's been experiencing lately.
It was nice to listen to somebody else's problems instead of focusing on my own. And if I could temporarily relieve some of her stress by giving her an understanding ear, we both win.
*Lauren, connecting with others is also good for avoiding work fatigue. I'm glad you took some time off on New Year's.
**She's a psychiatric social worker, thus familiar with powerful meds like Ativan. She was a bit surprised to hear Ativan was how I got through my 1st year of law school. Obviously, she doesn't know many attorneys.
