In an episode of The Big Bang Theory, Leonard described the hugging machine he built as a child to serve as a substitute for his mom. He needed to get affection from somewhere, but his mom wouldn't give it to him, so he constructed a machine to give him the affection he needed. It's absurd, and tragic.

Last night, I had a dream that military airplanes were coming to attack a gathering I was at. A friend told me the airplanes were only conducting military exercises, and were not actually going to attack. To assure me that I was safe, this friend hugged me for what seemed like an extended period. I don't get hugged on a regular basis, and I woke up feeling like someone had actually bestowed some physical affection onto me. It's absurd, and tragic.
