"Savannah's in the hospital."
The voice on the other end of the phone was low with barely contained fury and Paige Matthews felt her eyes narrow as anger started building in her.
"Piper, what happened?"
Her older sister took a deep breath on the other end of the line. "The guy she was dating... there was a fight."
Paige went cold. "Excuse me?"
"It apparently wasn't the first time."
Paige had to sit down in the chair as her hand clenched around the phone. "Her boyfriend has been hitting her?! Why the hell didn't she tell us -- or leave him?!"
"I don't know how long it's been going on, Paige. I know that what happened tonight was because she tried to break up with him. Carson is back... and he and Savannah have been spending some time together. Mike started in on her when she got back to her place."
Paige was packing a duffel bag as she talked to Piper. "Is she going to be okay, Piper?"
"I called Isabel and Wyatt. As soon as Wyatt gets back, Isabel will tell him and they'll come to the hospital."
"You didn't answer my question, Piper. Will she be okay?"
"The doctors say there are a few broken bones and she's going to be hurting for awhile... but, he doesn't know my son, so..."
Paige nodded, trying to keep her temper under control. "Do Eve or Carson know?"
"Carson is the one who brought her in and called me."
"He didn't shoot the bastard?"
"Mike was nowhere around. Savannah got herself to Carson's place before she collapsed. He got her here and called me. I've called Eve."
Paige felt her hands start to shake as she got angrier. "What hospital are you guys at, Piper?"
She wrote down the information that her sister gave her. "I'm on my way, Piper."
After they hung up, Paige sat on her bed for a moment, trying to get her anger under control.
Savannah Levine was her best friend and had been since they had roomed together at school. They had been through a lot together -- both good and bad -- so the idea of her being hurt badly enough by someone that she was in the hospital had Paige fighting back a rage she had never felt before.
Almost as strong as the rage was the confusion. What had Savannah been doing with a guy like that? Why didn't she use her magic to protect herself from him?
Paige was sitting by Savannah's bed, holding her hand, as she listened to Piper and Eve talk outside the door. Her best friend's face was bruised and she had a lot of bandages everywhere, but at least she was breathing on her own. She wasn't sure how she would have reacted if she had come in here and seen Savannah hooked up to an oxygen mask.
"I don't understand why she didn't tell us this was going on," Piper said in confusion from the hall. "Why did she put up with him treating her like this for so long?"
"I want to know why she didn't force bolt his ass through a wall the first time he laid a hand on her like that," Eve said in an angry voice. "She has more than enough power to do it, so why didn't she?"
"Because I don't use magic any more."
Paige looked down when she heard the raspy voice and saw that Savannah's eyes were open. "Hey you," she said gently. "How are you feeling?"
"My head hurts," Savannah admitted after a moment.
"I don't doubt it. From what I understand, he knocked you around quite a bit." She watched as recollection filled Savannah's eyes. "Why didn't you tell us, Savannah? Why didn't you tell me? I'm your best friend."
"I thought I could deal with him on my own," Savannah said quietly. "I didn't want you guys to know how he was acting..."
"How long?" Paige demanded.
"Paige..."
"How long, Savannah?"
Savannah sighed. "About six months."
"Six months? Savannah... but I saw you often and I never knew something was going on!" Paige looked upset. "You should have told me." She looked at her. "Why didn't you use your powers to protect yourself?"
"Because, I don't use magic any longer."
"You... what? For god sakes, why would you decide to do that? You're a witch, a powerful one. It's who you are."
"I just wanted to be normal, Paige. Magic... my magic causes too many problems."
"Savannah... talk to me." Paige was even more worried now, but her voice was firm. Savannah had always been happy to be a witch, had always relished in her power. What had changed. "Tell me what's going on."
Savannah closed her eyes for a moment and then opened them again. "I had an accident with my powers. I lost control of them."
"How so?"
"I was with my Dad's family," she said softly. "We were working on a few things and there was a problem. My powers went haywire as we tried to help... and the building we were in started coming down around us. If it hadn't been for Sean and my father, Kristof, getting us out of there... we would have died." A tear slid down Savannah's face. "I decided then and there that I was never going to use my magic again. It's too dangerous. I was going to be a normal girl with no powers."
"Oh honey," Paige said softly. "You're a witch, a good one, and just because something scary like that happens, you can't let it scare you into hiding what you are."
"I almost killed us all, Paige."
"But you didn't, Savannah," Paige pointed out softly. "And you trying not to be who you are almost got you killed by your boyfriend." She frowned. "That's the reason that you're sick all of the time when we've planned to do something, isn't it? He'd hit you and you didn't want us to know... so you said you were sick."
Savannah nodded. "I didn't want you see what had happened and I knew Mom and Mom would blow him to pieces and cause trouble for themselves."
"Savannah... I get that you worry about things happening to people you love, but we worry too." She squeezed her hand. "He almost killed you. Piper said you're hurt pretty badly. He can't get away with this or be given a chance to do it again." She looked into her best friend's face. "And from what you've told me, he will try to hurt you again."
