Summary: JaeJoong can see Yunho, but everyone around him denies that he's there. Is he really or is his mind just playing tricks on him?
“Junsu look, Yunho’s here” JaeJoong said excitedly while jumping up and down on the hospital bed, but when Junsu turned around, he saw no one. He shook his head and turned to him. “Jae, he’s not here.”
“Junsu, I’m not stupid. Yunho’s standing right next to you. He just said hi too.” He looked besides him, but there was no Yunho standing there.
“Jae, you need to snap out of it. Yunho’s not here, he’s not even living anymore. He’s dead.”
“Don’t believe him Jae. I’m right here, I always have been.”
“He’s right Su. How can you say Yunho’s not here when he’s right there?!” JaeJoong said getting slightly upset.
“Jae, you’re hallucinating. You’ve been like this for the past 2 years now. I know you’re angry and you want to believe that he’s still here with us but he’s not. You have to fight this Jae. Whatever he’s telling you, don’t believe him.”
Yunho walked over to JaeJoong and sat down on the side of his bed. He ran his hand across his cheek and smiled at him. “Jae, I love you and Su, but I swear I’m still alive. I don’t know why they keep saying I’m dead when you can still see me.”
“I know Yunho, I don’t know why either” he said hurt.
“JaeJoong please don’t do this. Yunho’s -“
“No Junsu! Yunho’s right! He’s still alive because I can see him with my own two eyes. Why do you guys keep saying he’s not here with us anymore?!”
“Because he isn’t! I can’t see him, ChangMin can’t see him, Yoochun can’t see him, and even the doctors can’t see him. How else do you want us to prove to you that you’re just talking to the air?!”
Tears formed in his eyes as Yunho wiped them away for him. He looked at Yunho for support and he said, “Listen Jae, the only way you can get them to leave you alone is if you just admit to them you can’t see me anymore. Just pretend, and when I come over to see you, you don’t need to pretend anymore.”
JaeJoong nodded and smiled at him as he got up and walked out of the room. Yunho spun around to take one last look at him, and then left.
“Junsu” he whispered when he knew Yunho was clearly out of sight, “I think … maybe you’re right.”
Junsu looked at him surprised. “About what?”
He sighed, “About Yunho being dead. I think you’re right.”
“Why do you say that?” Junsu asked to make sure this wasn’t another one of Yunho’s tricks.
“Because … every time he’s here when you guys aren’t, he tells me all these strange stories about people who have been dead for over 100 years now. He said he met Da Vinci and he was so honored to talk with him. And when Yunho leaves, there’s a puff of smoke around him and then he vanishes, just like that. Junsu, please help me. Don’t make Yunho hurt me anymore” JaeJoong begged him.
Junsu embraced him and rubbed his back soothingly. “I promise Jae, he won’t lay a hand on you ever again.”
He sniffed, “how can you promise me something like that when I can feel every part of him like he’s really here?”
Junsu flattened his hair, “I’ll find a way. And maybe if you keep going to therapy then we can get rid of Yunho for good.”
“What really happened to him Su?”
Junsu hesitated before answering, “Well Jae, I can tell you all that you need to know, but it’s a long story.”
“We’ve got time.”
“Ok” he said lying down next to JaeJoong on the bed. “It all started on a cool, November evening. You and Yunho always liked each other a lot. When you guys finally got together, you seemed like the perfect couple. But then again, even the ones who seemed perfect always had their flaws. Do you remember those times Jae?” Junsu asked him.
He thought for a moment, “not really. I remember meeting Yunho, but I can’t remember what we did or what happened after that.”
Junsu chuckled, “I don’t blame you. You two were literally brainwashed by each other that you completely forgot about us and everything else around you.”
“We forgot about you guys?”
“What I mean is you and Yunho spent most of you’re time with each other that you didn’t pay much attention to us. We didn’t really mind though. We thought if you were happy then so were we.”
“But, weren’t you mad, just a little?”
“Not mad, it hurt a tiny bit, but like I said, when you were with Yunho that was when you were the happiest.”
“So … how exactly did he …”
“Hold on, I’m coming to that part. Yunho was driving home from work one day and he got into this serious car accident. He was shaken up pretty badly and was sent to the emergency room. He had to get stitches and the whole works. When I went to visit him later that day he told me he wanted to see you. That was when I bought you to the hospital and you were scared for him. Yunho kept reassuring you by saying everything was going to be ok, but in the end it was all just words. He died a couple weeks after that and you were really heartbroken about it.
You told me you kept seeing him in you’re dreams at night, and sometimes you came over to my house to sleep over because you were really frightened. Then you suddenly got depressed about everything and somehow you had been seeing Yunho everywhere. When I came home from work I would see you talking to the wall or to some imaginary person on the couch and it got me worried. I brought you here and that’s when I found out you’ve been hallucinating all this time. Things got worse when you started saying Yunho was coming by here to see you everyday. It didn’t make any sense at all and I had to take you to therapy to help you feel better.
The Yunho you’re seeing is always telling you to do some sort of mischief and it ends up making things worse for you. That’s why I’m telling you Jae you really need to break free from this. You need to move on from Yunho and find someone else. I know you’re upset about all everything, but you really can’t go on like this.”
“I can’t help it Junsu. I love him.”
“I know you do, but now that he’s gone, who are you going to love, no one?”
JaeJoong shook his head. “You don’t understand Su. If I tell Yunho he’s not real he’ll leave and I won’t ever see him again.”
“Maybe that’s the best thing for you right now.”
JaeJoong rubbed his forehead with his thumb and index finger. He felt frustrated and angry with the fact that everything Junsu said was right. He couldn’t keep holding onto Yunho now that he’s dead, but he also couldn’t hurt his feelings by telling him he’s not really here.
“This Yunho isn’t real Jae. I promise he won’t kill you or hurt you in any way if you tell him what you feel. He’ll just leave you’re mind, and when he’s gone he won’t come back to haunt you anymore.”
JaeJoong felt another presence in the room. When he turned, he saw Yunho, arms crossed over his chest while leaning against the doorframe, staring right at him with a hurtful look on his face.
“Yunho …” JaeJoong said, “w-what are you doing here?”
“What’s wrong?” Junsu asked him worriedly.
JaeJoong swallowed hard as Yunho began walking in his direction.
“You don’t believe me Jae? I thought you said you loved me. If you do then why are you doing this to me, why are you betraying me?”
“I-I’m not Yunho. I do love you, but Junsu and the others said you -“
“They’re lying to you. They want us to break up. Don’t you get it?”
“What do you mean? I-I’m confused.”
“They wanted this from the moment we met. They hated me Jae, and they didn’t like the fact that you and I were together. They want to get rid of me for good.”
“JaeJoong, what is he telling you?” Junsu asked him.
He looked at Junsu in disbelief. He honestly didn’t know who or what to believe anymore.
“You were lying to me too Su?”
“What, no Jae. I swear I would never lie to you.”
“That’s a lie.”
“Jae, don’t listen to him! Ignore him, he’s not real! Remember what I said before?!” Junsu shook his shoulders harshly.
JaeJoong covered his ears to block out the noise that was ringing in his head. He shut his eyes tightly closed and then all noise stopped. Everything around him came to a halt as Yunho walked away from him upset, and slammed the door shut.
JaeJoong never saw him ever again after that. Yunho had officially disappeared from his life, and for all JaeJoong knew, he himself wasn’t sure if he was really there or not.
